Is there any particular reason that you're reticent to modify the style? That seems like the easiest solution to me.

I don't use Word 2010, myself, yet; I have it installed on a new computer that I haven't switched over to.

I don't know if modifying the style is an option, since this document is being prepared for an outside agency which may have a style guide. In theory, I don't mind suggesting that they modify the style, but in any case am not sure how to do so, especially the part about creating a text box as part of the style.

Over on my personal journal, someone suggested, "Format the text as desired, then right click on the style name and select 'update style to match selection'". I haven't had the chance to try that yet, but I'm just about to.

I only switched over to 2010 six months ago, so I'm still of the belief that it may be spawn of Satan. ;) I CAN'T FIND ANYTHING!

However, your commenter is correct -- it's that easy. Format, right-click, and you get further options for Styles, and one is to update based on what you've got. That part is easy... now, finding your way back to it later may involve breadcrumbs, but that's largely been my experience with 2010 so far. :)
