i'm glad it went well!

followed by walking the historic district

did he point out the gargoyles on the top story of St Micheael's hotel? when you go back, take a look at them---they're the faces of senators the sculptor didn't like, from the 1920s when the hotel was built. :-) there's also an entire hidden story beneath Whiskey Row, probably originally designed as storage or owner-apartments, where japanese immigrants lived in hiding during WWII to avoid internment camps. i used to know how to get in there from the city drainage system. :D

Darn... I didn't have the gargoyles pointed out to me. A secret set of room accessible from the drainage system? That is just too cool. If it all works out, I may have to go looking... LOL

I am probably too old for that sort of thing, but gee, that brings back memories of finding the FISH room in the steam tunnels under old Workman at NM Tech.

i bet you could find a high school student who would show you how to get in! *grin*

it's fun to think about, anyhow. in some of the shops, particularly along St Michael's Alley in the basement shops, you can see where they've bricked up the old tunnel doors and so on.

If you go to ERAU, will you try to do research? Or, will you take your summers off? As I understand it, most research-oriented academic positions require you to provide 50% of your salary through granting.

Traditionally, ERAU has been a fairly teaching oriented school, with research being a possible, but not necessary, component. My impression from my interview is that doing research would be strongly encouraged, but not required. Specifically, the school makes allowances for teaching versus research if you are able to bring in grant money. But it is definitely not a "publish or perish" environment. Which I think is probably good for me.

Summers appear to be very much up to me... there is certainly enough teaching to go around if I choose not to do anything else - but finding research grants is an options, or consulting - they seem to be very comfortable with me having outside sources of income.

I think it sounds like a really ideal situation for me. I am still waiting on an offer, however, and have another phone interview with a bigger, more research oriented school today.
