I will reiterate that one does not learn physics from the original of anyone, really. At best, one can pick up some color if you already know the science. If you find yourself looking into more of those science books, don't be afraid to walk away if it's head-hurty. Go find a used freshman science textbook if you want to be well-rounded in that way.

Fortunately, Fourier was the last of the hideously uncomprehensible scientists in the great books set.

The rest of the science works consist of Lavoisier on chemistry, Farraday on the dawn of electrical research, Darwin, William James on psychology, Freud, and a collection of short 20th century works.

I've made a couple of attempts at reading The Satanic Verses. To me it was just weird, and not in an interesting way.
I definitely agree with you about keeping church and state separate.

Seems to me, the whole point of the book is the unintended personal consequences to the author from writing it, that he surely didn't foresee.
