Merlin Series Two Episode One The Curse of Cornelius Sigan

This first episode assumes that you already know the main characters and sticks them straight into an adventure rather than having flashbacks to the first series or anything like that which I think is the best way forward.

At first it does seem to have gone backwards a bit with Arthur being a bit more like his early arrogant self in this episode and seems to be treating Merlin in the same way that he did for much of the first series which did seem a bit odd considering what they have been through during the first season and also that Arthur does seem to more friendly with Merlin than is normal in one’s servants, you would imagine.

Neither Gwen nor Morgana had very much to do in this episoe except look pretty in their new frocks which they both do admirably but, having said that, there is a little scene that suggests that there is more to the feelings that Arthur and Gwen have for each other, but will never admit it to each other.

McKenzie Crook was the main guest star in the episode and started off playing his usual slimy character whom would do whatever it takes to get what he wants into pure evil by the end of the episode after he had been possessed by the soul of the evil warlock Cornelius Sigan. He really did change his performance once he was playing the part of Sigan rather than the cowardly Cedric.

This episode is pretty much more of the same for Merlin: something strange happens, which Gaius puts down to something magical, which Uther resolutely refuses to believe, then when said magical creature/being is unleashed in Camelot, Arthur tries to be the one to vanquish the threat. Then Arthur is put into mortal danger, but still Uther refuses to believe, and Merlin has to save the day using his magic.

You really sometimes want to slap Uther until he refuses to stop refuting the exsistence of magic. I am not sure that Uther will ever truly embrace magic and sorcery after what happened with his late wife and maybe that is the point of Uther, as it is not needed for him to believe, but for Arthur to start questioning things.

This episode was not a bad season opener but, judging from the highlights real at the end of the episode the best is yet to come and it seems that Morgana is about to learn the truth about her powers.

Merlin Series Two Episode Two Once and Future Queen

In this episode Gwen finally gets something to do and even gets to give Arthur what for, although she didn't go so far as to tell him that she is in love with him, which she so is.

I guess though from Arthur's point of view most of the servant girls in Camelot are probably in love with him so Gwen's infatuation with him wouldn't otherwise register on his, unless he had similar feelings towards her, which judging from the last couple of episodes Arthur fancies the arse of her, which you can't blame him for as she is a very nice girl.

Now Morgana is more the sort of girl he would be expected to go for, but for one she is pretty much his sister, and also he doesn't even fancy her. I mean why would the heir to the throne marry someone who he didn't have feelings for, what sort of marriage would that ultimately lead to?

Unusually for a Merlin episode there is very little sorcery in this episode as the main story is that an assassin has been sent to kill Arthur by a fellow King in revenge for the death of his son and that is quite a nice change.

Of course it was sorcery that saved the day but that is the whole point of the show as if Merlin was not able to use his powers then Arthur would have been dead long ago which really wouldn’t be a good thing for the kingdom of Camelot.

Adrian Lester is the guest star in this episode as the assassin sent to kill Arthur and is ok but really doesn’t have that much to do considering that he is the main guest star.

Morgana fared even worse and didn’t even have a line of dialogue in this episode, still Gwen made up for that in this episode by having more screen time in this episode than she probably had in the first half of the first season. Ok perhaps that’s an exaggeration but I bet it isn’t that far from the truth.

Still next week’s episode looks like Morgana might actually get something to do, which is nice.
