Rules of Ascension - Winds of the Forelands Book 1 by David B. Coe
Fantasy
This was the first book in a fantasy series that Natalie suggested.  I liked it.  The basic idea is that there are regular people (called Eandi) and sorcerors (called Qirsi).  The Eandi rule the land and the Qirsi serve as ministers in their courts.  The plot is that there's a ( Read more... )

"I was never a big fan of the [comic book] genre because it was just [t]oo dark for me, but I still loved this book."

You would have liked the Golden Age of comics. Everything was pretty sunny and the superheroes always handily destroyed the Communist-analogue characters. It wasn't until the Silver Age that shit got real.

Also, have you ever read any of Raymond E. Feist's books about the world of Midkemia? His writing (especially Riftwar Saga) was a big influence on my fantasy writing.

I haven't. I actually haven't heard of him before. I'll add him and the other book you recommended to my ever-growing list! I also want to start on Terry Pratchett, because absolutely everyone says he's fantastic.

Hmm, I have no insightful comment or nod of agreement except for the fact that I totally dig the idea of book reviews handily located on my friends list. I still have not read anything substantial aside from school crap and despite the heavy reading load this semester, I'm determined to change some habits to do something about this (it's shameful wanting to write fantasy-like stories and not read barely any fantasy). I used to read hardcore, but for me too it stopped in high school too (although ironically, that's when I started enjoying writing and doing it a lot). So rock on! I totally want to hear what you're reading.

(Also, found my Dragonlance book! It was by some old textbooks, who knew! I'll probably be attempting to finish that one up and see if I want the rest of the series. I left off at a spot that was getting pretty good though.)

Hehe well I'm glad someone is enjoying reading these! I wrote them mostly because I'm a narcissist and I like to read my own writing. lol. I'll keep you updated on what I'm reading in case you'd like to get back into it too!
