He's waiting for a big juicy geriatric cat to walk out on your porch. :)
I love hawks. My neighborhood is FULL of them. Before we got so many, the chipmunks were overpopulating my yard. The little fuckers tunnel under all of my flowers and destroy the root systems. Between Mr. Rat Snake, my 6 ft long friend that lives under the patio, and the hawks, I rarely see a chipmunk.
Since the squirrels are larger and stupider he seems to prefer their little peanut-fattened selves.
The Barred Owl took out a great number of the Chipmunks last fall though. He or she would just hang out next to the driveway, picking them off one by one as they crossed. And then look at us in irritation if we came out to do something in the yard.
squee! I had one at my old house this morning. Two crows chased it off. Then when I got to my temporary abode (aka parents house), another red tail was perched on the street light

I put a cage out with food. I fed his little blue self. I talked to him while he made obnoxious parakeet noises in the trees around our house.
Sadly, he may have become a hors d'oeurve for someone.
I'd like to think he left for someplace more tropical, like Florida - where he took up with a colony of escaped parakeets.
