Step aside, pimps and prostitutes! The American teenage girl is going to show you how it’s done. She may not be of age, no, but that’s no problem, she’ll consent and she won’t take your money anyway because she is so desperate to lose it that she’ll just be giving it away! After all, she IS going to lose all of her libido by the time she’s ( Read more... )

Godey's Lady's Book called -- they agree with you. This trend of young ladies displaying their ankles must stop, or they will incite the menfolk with their sinful ways!

I actually really have to disagree with you on this one. Sure, I agree that girls of that age probably shouldn't be dressing like that, but it doesn't mean that they're "asking for it." For a lot of them, it's just a phase where they're exploring their sexualities and finding their comfort zones. I'd say that it's better to have the freedom to mess up and perhaps wear two few clothes than to have everyone dress modestly but lack the option to do otherwise. I agree that rompers look ridiculous, but it doesn't mean that the girls who wear them want to - or should be - seduced.

satirical commentary = not necessarily fact, just satire adragontongue May 19 2010, 19:58:52 UTC
for reference, i'm related to a few shrinks who share anonymous horror stories: there are so many young girls who are now dealing with the horrifying mental consequences of abortion and giving up babies for adoption - and when i say young, i'm meaning as young as 12 - and girls at sixteen sleeping with thirty five year olds and thinking that it's really alright.
i dont think there should necessarily be an age limit for sex, but i think there is a moral limit and the law is there because one cannot enforce morality.
i'm not saying they want to be seduced, i'm saying that actions speak louder than words and sometimes people doing the acting are remarkably oblivious to this.

I had to look these things up on Google, but: I'd say they're ugly, they're stupid, some instances of them are wretchedly immodest, and they don't seem to target teenagers any more than any other fashion trend. Also, what difference does it make if you have to take off the whole outfit to go to the bathroom, where no one is going to see you anyway? Most of the "rompers" results I saw were with shorts about equal to an actual pair of women's shorts, and I seem to recall from my youth some much less revealing outfits (long legs, maybe long sleeves) that had to come totally off to go to the bathroom, but they'd hardly be considered slutty.

This is not to say that we don't have some disturbing trends in the sexualization of younger and younger people; I agree that we do have problems there. This is merely my thought that rompers and this season's variations on showing leg aren't spectacular examples of the youth-corrupting focus.

the romper commentary was just cus i think they're the most idiotic clothing in the world. rompers are what you put on babies. you take the whole thing off and change diapers. come on people. ew. the ones they're selling now are less than short shorts and miniskirts and are VERY slutty - like wearing tiny overalls without a shirt under them. ew ew ew.

Have you seen any really short ones "in the wild"? I was looking for a dress the other day (no luck) and saw a few examples that had knee-length pants on them, including one spectacularly hideous peach one that had knee-length hammerpants. Didn't see any rompers with the hotpants look. (Did see hotpants, oh-so-awful hotpants.)

I havent seen many rompers on the high schoolers in my town - they're all into jean miniskirts and gstring thongs with ridiculous heels. I mostly shop online - forever21 has a few that are just... spectacularly AWFUL - but girls BUY them and are like OMG I FOUND A ROMPER OMGOMGOMGOMG... even Victoria's Secret has some, but theirs are mostly beach coverups so wahtever. TJ Maxx has some... and American Apparel has hotpants and rompers and the combination and ohhhh god gouge out my eyes.... ;)
