The Fall Picspam- Part I

Oct 11, 2008 01:36

I wanted to see The Fall because I've been a fan of The Cell for a few years now and I think Lee Pace is just fantastic. The Fall exceeded any expectations I had of it, and I loved it so much I decided to do an epic picspam. It's not just that the finished product is gorgeous with a captivating story throughout, but the trivia I've learned about the making of the film is kind of fascinating. The film took over 4 years to film and it was shot in 18 different countries. AND according to the director and actors there was no green screen used which is pretty much unheard of these days. Alright, onto the picspam! (Just a note: This picspam is going to cover the whole film, so of course there will be spoilers.)

Roy: You’re Alexandria?
Alexandria: Yes
Roy: Your note came in, and landed on my lap. Couldn’t even understand it. It’s written in gibberish or something.
Alexandria: [In broken English] You didn’t understand it, didn’t you, didn’t understand it, it’s not for you.
Roy: My name’s Roy. How’d you hurt your arm?
Alexandria: I fell.
Roy: Me too.
Alexandria: I was picking oranges.

Roy: Hey, Alexandria. Hey, do you know you’re named after Alexander the Great, who was the greatest warrior who ever lived?
Alexandria: Yes. And my note is not in gibberish. It’s in English!

Alexandria: Why?
Roy: Well, there wasn’t enough water for all of them and it was Alexander the Great’s way of showing his army that they were all equal…
Alexandria: It’s stupid.
Roy: Well, what would you do better?
Alexandria: Was Alexander throw the water instead to give every soldier a little bit.

Roy: Hey, why don’t you come back tomorrow and I’m gonna tell you a different story. An epic tale of love and revenge.

Apparently, the director told everyone on set that Lee Pace was actually paralyzed and couldn't use his legs so that Catinca Untaru would believe the same. Catinca is a true gem in this movie. It was her first film, she's from Romania and she barely spoke English when they started shooting. She's such a genuine young talent and the movie wouldn't have been the same without her.

Alexandria: Will you tell me the story now?
Roy: What story?
Alexandria: The epic.
Roy: All right. Close your eyes. What do you see?
Alexandria: Nothing.
Roy: Rub 'em. Can you see the stars?
Alexandria: Yes.
Roy: It was a starry night...

"In all, there were five of them. They all only one thing in common. A hatred for governor Odious."

Roy: So, the buccaneers were trapped on this island.
Alexandria: What means a buccaneer?
Roy: Well, it’s like a pirate. Pirate and buccaneer, it’s like the same thing.
Alexandria: But I don’t like pirate stories.
Roy: You’re the one who asked for a pirate story.
Alexandria: Mm mm. No.
Roy: Yes, you did.
Alexandria: I just wanted to know if your friend was a pirate.
Roy: Why?
Alexandria: Because he has just one leg.
Roy: Oh, right. Well, yeah, it’s not a pirate story. It’s a story about bandits. In fact, our masked hero couldn’t even swim.

Roy: I just wanna play a little game. I want you to go outside and touch one of my toes.
Alexandria: No, tell me the story. What happened to the Blue Bandit?
Roy: It won't take long. Just go outside and touch one of my toes.
Alexandria: Okay...I'm touching your little toe.
Roy: No! Please, please don't tell me which toe you're touching. I gotta guess. That's the whole point of the game.
Alexandria: I'm touching one!
Roy: You're touching my big toe.
Alexandria: Mmmhmm.
Roy: Are you telling the truth?
Alexandria: Mmmhmm. Look. Really.
Roy: Oh, I got that?
Alexandria: What happened with his brother? Did he save him?
Roy: No, no, no, no. Were you telling a story? Were you telling the truth just now?
Alexandria: No. I was telling the truth.
Roy: No, you just said no, you weren't telling the truth.
Alexandria: No, I tell you it.
Roy: You little liar.
Alexandria: No.
Roy: Alexandria, were you lying to me?
Alexandria: I touch your big toe.
Roy: Do you want me to finish the story? The Masked Bandit arrived at the Chandelier Hall too late. Odious had already tortured his brother and crew and hung them.

This is when we first see Roy's feelings of desperation and hopelessness at his situation break through. He asks Alexandria to test out the feeling in his legs but automatically disbelieves her and calls her a liar after the "test." Even though she was lying, because all she wants to do is please him and give him the answer he wants so that she can hear more of his story, it's clear that he's predisposed to believe that there's no chance his condition will improve and he takes it out on Alexandria by giving the story a turn for the worse.

All right, this is it for Part I. Part II is here.
