Friday evening, I carried a pot to a potluck dinner, as one does. (I often bring salad or cookies to potluck meals, because they're so portable.) But this potluck was very close to home, so I had an actual pot in my arms, lid held on with rubber bands, wrapped in a towel to keep it warm

Oh, my! That sounds very scary. I'm glad you weren't physically hurt, but geeze. And cabbage has an unmistakable odor; I'm surprised a dog would go for that.

Dogs are omnivores and are happy to eat plenty of things that aren't meat, but cooked cabbage is pretty out there. The dog we had when I was a kid was happy to eat carrots or potatoes or all kinds of other veggies, but she drew the line at dill pickles; I would have expected cooked cabbage to elicit a similar response.
