When Helena Grace Wells became certain that she could never love anyone as much as she now loved Alexandria Crowley, that's when she began the preparations. What at irst started as a mad spark of an idea slowly but surely took hold, growing from a germinated seed into a full fledged tree, much like exactly what the inventor was trying to accomplish.
The first time she allowed herself to write the idea in her inventor's notebook she felt a clutch of something, maybe fear, or maybe excitement grip her heart. She would never speak of it aloud, lest the tiny idea be crushed underneath the weight of her hopes, but for months she would had allowed herself to dream. The idea was a simple one, really, and theoretically just as simple to execute. But her anxiety started to compound when she surveyed the myriad choices her and Alexandria would have to make. Acting ona choice had never been hard for Helena. It was the deciding that worried her.
"Dearest," Helena felt gentle hands sliding arond her waist from behind, the sweet sandlewood scent of her lover a comforting one. "You've been standing staring out the window for nearly an hour now."
Helena forced a smile without turning to meet Alexandria's green eyes. She hoped the woman couldn't feel how nervous she was. One touch of her sweaty palms would certainly give her away, even if she did blame the roaring fire for her heat. Helena stared out at the falling snow for a moment longer.
"What inventions are being birthed inside that lovely head of yours?" Alexandria squeezed Helena closer still, pressing her lips against Helena's neck, the lavender scent her favorite. "Dazzle me with your brilliant mind."
Helena gathered her wits and turned to face her lover, taking a deep breath. "Darling, do you know you are the love of my life?"
Alexandria nodded slowly, her eyesbrows furrowing. Normally Helena's professions of love were hardly cause for concern, but the flushed look on her lovely face was telling, or so Alexandria surmised.
"And you know that if we lived in another time when the law provided for it, I would marry you gladly and live with you as man and wife forever?" Helena bit her bottom lip as she waited for Alexandria to answer. The two of them had freely spoken of marriage and imagined a world where those possibilities were afforded them. Alexandria nodded, this time with a real frown, wondering exactly where Helena was going.
"Well," Helena faltered once on the edge of her proposition, fear of rejection almost overwhelming. But when she looked up into Alexandria's face and saw nothing but eager love, she found courage. "I want you to be the mother of our child, all glowing and pregnant and beautiful."
Alexandria blinked twice before a smile crept across her face. "Our...child? I'm afraid I don't understand."
Helena exhaled the breath she had been holding. Misunderstanding she could handle much better than rejection. "I want to start a family. You and I and our darling child, and we'll live together and raise him and love him."
Alexandria continued to blink. She pursed her lips, unsure if she was being daft or if Helena Wells was pulling her leg. Maybe she was missing the point altogether. "My sweet, you do know that neither of us has a...well a cock, at least not a real one. I know you know this."
At that Helena had to finally laugh, the intense pressure in her chest lifting with her chuckle. "I've never heard you complain about that," Helena quipped, taking Alexandria by the hands and pulling her toward the parlor couch, where the two of them sat, Alexandria leaning against Helena's shoulder. "I've devised a way for you to become pregnant without a man -- or a cock, as you say -- involved. Would you want to try something like that with me?"
Alexandria nearly gasped at the sudden possibilities. "Would I? Would I ever!"
Helena grinned, sure for yet another reason that she was in love with the most perfect woman in the world. "Really?" she couldn't help but ask, her wildest dreams starting to take root in reality. "You would do that with me?"
"Who else, my love?" Alexandria looked to Helena with glassy eyes. She could hardly believe her ears. "You're the only person I would ever dream of enduring nine dreadful months for."
Helena laughed aloud, wrapping her arms aorund her lover and kissing her, barely able to contain her joy.
"On one condition, my love," Alexandria pulleda way from the kiss just as breathless as Helena.
"Anything," Helena promised, her dark eyes dancing. She ran her fingers through Alexandria's wavy hair, caressing the woman's cheek as she waited for the request.
"If we have a girl, we must call her Christina."
Helena nodded immediately. Now that it was chosen, Helena couldn't dream of any other name.
Our Christina.
