Summary:
Looking at the bright clock on the dash of the car, Taemin noticed that it was 7:13 pm. He frowned and looked back to the road. He was driving along the country side. Blinking a couple of times and scrunching his eyes while leaning forward on his sit; the young man tried to see better in the darkness ahead of him. However, the gestured made his hair fall over his eyes forcing him to swipe it away only to gasp in a rush of adrenaline when he almost lost control of the car. He placed both hands on the steering wheel and griped it. Taemin felt his heart pounding against his chest furiously. He was not in the mood of totaling his car and, possibly, killing himself. Even though it was difficult considering that it was not only very dark but it was, also, raining rather heavily outside; the sound of rain drops like bullets against the car which didn’t help at all on the young man’s nervousness. Not even the bright white headlights of his car casted away the shadows that surrounded him. Though Taemin was fairly young, he was still a young adult and he convinced himself that there was nothing to fear from the heavy weather and deserted dark road as long as he put attention to it.
However, as minutes passed, Taemin groaned softly. It was getting a bit frustrating and his body was beginning to ache because of his posture. When he tried to use the radio to, at least, consume the deafening silence -besides of the loud rain drops that assaulted his car and the loud, fast winds that rushed by- that were starting to frustrate him, the thing only blinked its bright color of green before dying back to nothing. He had no other choice, to his misfortune, than to welcome the horrible whispers of the wind since his radio had just decided to breakdown. To be honest with himself, Taemin couldn’t think of a reason for the thing not to work. His car was fairly new and he only had used it to go to the university, his job, and, like now, to family reunions.
Taemin hadn’t seen his family since their last reunion which was about six months ago. He knew his family was going to interrogate him with questions and that idea didn’t quite make him happy. That was why he had taken about two hours to actually gather up all the courage in him and hop into his car for the long ride to his grandparents’ house. It wasn’t that he had done something wrong or that he was failing his classes. On the contrary, Taemin’s score was a bit above average and, with a little bit of more work, he knew he was going to graduate with honors. He only had one year and a half left in college and he was already dreading the moment of his departure into the life of adulthood. And hopefully, in that new life he was heading to, he would be a successful doctor; chiropractor to be precise.
So, seeing as things were, none of those things were the reason he had to put on his manly pants and walk out the door of his small and comfy apartment. No, it was the fact that they would want to meet his infamous girlfriend. Taemin was getting completely embarrassment as he thought about that, because she was not real. He hadn’t want to lie to his parents about a non-existing relationship. But at that time he had gotten, for the first time in his life, drunk and was dared to do so by his pretty much completely wasted friends. The dare happened about two weeks ago and he had not build up the courage to tell his parents the truth. Taemin knew that, by now, his whole family was enthusiast to meet her. There was going to be a lot of explaining to do. Taemin knew that it was going to be a very long night.
Taking a slow and deep breath before sighing, Taemin tried relaxing his tired and stressed body and let the reality of his trip comfort him from his pending doom. He still had a little over an hour to arrive to his grandparents’ house, which was not even close to the time he needed to get himself ready for the judging glares he could already feel carving into his skin and poking his soul.
Yes. Lee Taemin was very stressed.
It wasn’t easy but, after a good twenty minutes or so, Taemin was able to forget about what was awaiting him and concentrated completely on the slippery road. Or rather, the black patch of concrete that he could see thanks to the headlights of the car and the dancing drops of rain and the occasional leafs that passed in front of him. Taemin was a bit concern because he hadn’t hear anything about a storm on the news and it just left him wondering if it was an abnormal phenomenon that had decided to fall upon him. The rain and winds didn’t seem like they were going away any time soon so he knew he was going to driving under that heavy weather until he arrived to his destination.
Scrunching his nose, Taemin felt an itchy feeling and he knew he was about to sneeze. Taking a big mouthful of air, Taemin’s head violently dropped and his eyes shut themselves tightly as his body expulsed whatever threat had tried to settle inside his lungs. Quickly opening his eyes and look back at the road, Taemin felt air get stuck on his throat as he saw someone jump in front of his car. He didn’t waste time as he hit the brakes and gripped the steering wheel tighter than the last time, his knuckles almost turning white. Taemin felt the car slide on the wet road until it came to an abrupt stop, making him hit his head rather hard against the steering wheel.
Taemin groan in pain as he slowly rose his head and placed a hand on his forehead. At first, he failed to register anything else besides the immense pain he was feeling but, soon enough, he felt a bit of wetness where he brushed his fingers against his skin. He didn’t have to look at his hand, though he did just to confirm with a grunt of annoyance, that he was indeed bleeding.
And as Taemin tried to find something to clean his bloody hand and bleeding forehead, a loud tap was heard by the driver’s window. The young man jumped slightly in surprise before he remembered the reason why he had smacked his head against the steering wheel. Worry about the condition of the stranger clouded his better judgment to not stop the car or roll down the window or talk to strangers in a deserted roads with a most likely to be storm upon them.
So he rolled down his window, even though he couldn’t see the stranger.
And he asked him if he was okay, even though the man just stared back at him blankly.
But when the man leaned forward to peer his head almost all the way inside the car, which was when Taemin’s judgment cleared and a knot formed in his throat not allowing air to pass through.
However, the man just warmly smiled at Taemin and the young man forced himself to swallow the loop in his throat before he tried to speak again.
“Are you alright, sir?” his voiced was nothing but a whisper that could barely be heard with the rain and wind storming outside his car.
“I am” the stranger responded with a silky voice which left Taemin wondering if he should really be afraid of the man or if he should just step on the gas now that he knew the man was fine. The alarms in his head told him that the latter was the best action to take, making him desire to put a distance between the man and himself as quickly as possible. But as the man continued, Taemin began to let his guard down a bit too fast. “I’m sorry I startled you” he said with a small frown covering his features, “It’s just so dark out here and I couldn’t think of any other way to get your attention than to do step on the road” The man’s words sounded a bit sad and lonely and Taemin wondered if the man was lost or if his car had broken down under the heavy weather.
“It’s okay” he found himself replying though the sting and wetness running down his face said otherwise. The man noticed as well.
“It’s not, you’re hurt” if Taemin though that the man looked sad before, now he just looked heartbreaking. “I’m very sorry” the stranger repeated and, for some reason, it gave Taemin a bit of anxiety to hear him repeat those words.
“It’s really okay but you shouldn’t be out in the rain, you’ll get sick. Where’s your car?” he asked as he slightly stretched his neck to try to look beyond the man beside his car but he was only greeted with darkness.
“It’s in the garage” the man spoke but didn’t made any other sign to continue until Taemin asked him if his house was close by. “It’s right there” the man pointed with his thumb over his shoulder to a rather large house by the side of the road. Taemin wondered how he could have missed it. “But I have a little problem, that’s why I stepped in front of your car” he said and before Taemin could question him about the reason, the man continued speaking. “I left my keys inside so I pretty much locked myself out” the stranger chuckled rather sheepishly and scratched the back of his head in embarrassment.
“Oh” was the best thing Taemin could come up with.
“Yeah” he encountered before straightening up and placing his hands in his pockets. “I was wondering if you have something so I could force myself in”
The young boy pondered on it for a few seconds before finally telling the man that he might have a crowbar in the trunk. The man smiled widely in glee as he told him that it would be very helpful before bowing at him in thankfulness. Taemin gestured with his head to the man to get inside his car so he could drive them up to the front of the house and the man just thanked him once more before he trotted to the passenger’s door to get inside the car.
Once again there was silence in the car, besides of the storm outside -yes, Taemin decided it was a storm-. The drive to the house took less than thirty seconds, though by foot it would have taken a bit longer; plus, the unpleasant weather. And as he took off the seatbelt and was about to open the car door, the man spoke up making him turn his attention on him.
“I’m Lee Jinki, by the way” he extended his hand and wore a soft smile on his lips, his eyes squinting just the slightest. It made Taemin pause once more as he stared at the man now known as Jinki for a bit too long, wondering if he should give out his real name. But in the end, he took Jinki’s hand and shook it.
“Lee Taemin”
Jinki’s eyes widen a bit before his smile widen into another heart-warming smile and commented at how much of a coincidence it was that they both had the same surname. Taemin just chuckled awkwardly and agreed. Jinki didn’t seem to mind.
As they stepped out of the car, Jinki walked directly to the trunk and Taemin froze for a few second at the freezing droplets of water that tried to pierce his skin. And the growing sting on his forehead made matters worse.
He wondered how Jinki could stand under such weather for so long.
Once Taemin handed Jinki the crowbar that was in his trunk, he followed the man to the porch and watched as the man forced the door open -or rather broke the door open- before he was invited inside. If it hadn’t been for the pain on his forehead and the rapid dropping of his body’s temperature, he would have declined.
The lighting of the house was better than Taemin would have thought it would have been considering the obvious age the place must have. And even though he was on the first floor of the two story house -and he suspected it to have an attic- he couldn’t hear water leaking inside the house. Heck, he could barely hear the storm raging outside. The man named Jinki must really take good care of the house.
Taemin’s eyes scanned the entrance of the house for a few seconds before his eyes landed on a blushing and apologizing Jinki. The man glanced at him as he apologized before he took the keys that were on the small table beside the main entrance. Taemin couldn’t help but chuckle at the man’s clumsiness and constant embarrassed gestures. And even though Taemin could tell the man was older than him, he actually found his actions cute.
Jinki turned to Taemin fully after his embarrassment had died enough and told him to make himself comfortable as he look for a few towels, clothes and for the first aid kit to remedy the damage he had done. Taemin just shook his head and waved a hand in front of himself but quickly regretted it as he realized he was starting to get a bit dizzy. It must be from the cold water soaking his clothes and skin and the still bleeding of his injured forehead. And he swears that there had not been a headache before.
Catching up on the younger man’s state, Jinki gestures him to go down the hall and sit by the fire place as he went upstairs to get what he needed. But as Taemin passed by the staircase, a putrefied odor assaulted his nostrils and engraved themselves heavily on his tongue. The young man gagged a bit before he brought his sleeves up to cover his mouth and nose as he eyed suspiciously the staircase closet door.
Taking a curious step closer to the closed door, Taemin wrapped his thin fingers around the knob and opened the door slowly. The door had been guarding and keeping inside the worst of the smell so when Taemin completely opened the door, he tightened his hand around his mouth and nose but the sight in the small compartment made Taemin’s stomach turn and flip and he almost emptied it on the middle of the hall, his eyes almost bulging out of his head.
Inside the closet were three bodies. Three bodies of three young man that had been left to putrefy. Taemin could tell that each of them had been locked inside the closet -killed- with a bit of time gapping between them. However, they were all still rigid, grey and seemed to have insects crawling around and about the corpses as they feasted on the decaying flesh.
The young man’s eyes imprinted in his mind the horrible bruises, burns and cuts on each limb of each body that were still pronouncedly present on them. And there was also dried blood and other fluids he rather not think about what they might have been.
In fact, he didn’t want to think about anything at all. He just knew he had to get out of that place.
Taemin didn’t waste a second as he rushed outside the house of the man so-called Jinki and jumped inside his car. He turned on the car and made a ‘U’ turn as he sped towards the road and far away from the house. His body shaking violently and hyperventilating as his heart was hammering fast and hard against his chest. If he wasn’t so intent on putting distance between the house and the man and himself, he would have worried it might just break through and out of his ribcage.
As he finally made it back on the road, Taemin dared himself to look at his rearview mirror. His heart stopping for a second as he saw the intense gazing eyes of the man, Jinki, staring right back at him through the mirror, right from the backseat of his car.
Taemin hit the brakes abruptly, the car sliding along the road a bit as it stopped. He jerked his head to the backseats of his car with wide terrified eyes to only find an empty car seat.
