Jinki swore that he was being mocked in his sleep, in his dreams. Every time he recalled the deep gaze and bright smiles, the tender touches or the softly whispered words of affection he dreamt about as he sat on his bed every morning, he could feel his chest tighten and an iron grip constricting his throat.

However, no matter how much he felt like screaming on the inside, he would keep his composure on the outside. Shielding his eyes from the light and rubbing the sleep away from them, he’d usually just go on about his normal routine of every day.
Still, in those days, he won’t look at Jonghyun in the eyes or at him at all. It would take a while before his skin stopped tingling from the tender touches or for his ears to forget the soft brushes of breath against them. They were just dreams but, to Jinki, they always seem too real.

And it always broke his heart.

So, it was only when he was getting his hair done that he finally gathered up his courage and decided to take a glance at Jonghyun’s direction from the corner of his eyes. To his relief and disappointment, Jonghyun was looking at his cellphone, all of his concentration on it, as he typed away. Jinki’s gaze lingered on him for a few moments but not enough for the younger man to notice, or so he hoped. Jonghyun was always very attentive of things so it was hard to know for sure if he had or had not notice something until he voiced the answer himself.

When the hairstylist turned Jinki’s head at an angle where couldn’t glance at Jonghyun anymore he just looked at his own hands through the mirror. Jonghyun hadn’t tried to approach him after he had firmly told him he didn’t need or, rather, no one could help with his situation. It was odd because he usually kept barking at the same tree until he got his answers and he was pleased with them. However this time around, he just kept his distance from Jinki. Which unnerved Jinki till no end.

Maybe Jonghyun was just giving Jinki what h asked for, privacy and space. He could be waiting for him to open up, though Jinki knew he would never be able to do so.

Or maybe he just though it was too bothersome to try… But Jinki didn’t want to think about that.

As his thoughts stray somewhere else, Jinki’s memory of that night invaded his mind. And that was when his brain finally registered something Jonghyun had said at the time.

They knew. They all did.

He felt a shiver run down his spine as he became self-conscious, paranoia kicking in as he felt all eyes directed at him, even though he knew it was not true. But he couldn’t help but question it.

Did they really know? And if they did, what were they thinking? They probably though he was exaggerating or maybe they though he was just a burden.

It was true that Jinki barely took the initiative on anything lately; the other members had to fill in for him. Even Taemin knew their schedules better than he did and he was supposed to be the leader of the group.

His cheeks dusted with a bit of red as he began to feel frustrated with himself. He wouldn’t oppose them if the members thought of him as useless, he himself started to come to the same conclusion. A good leader was a strong leader, someone who would always stand up for everyone else and guide them through ups and downs. However, he was letting selfish feelings take control over his rational mind and affect his job and responsibilities negatively. He couldn’t allow it to continue.

A tap on his shoulder snapped him out of his thoughts. He looked up through the mirror and saw the stylist give him thumbs up as a sign that she was all done and he was good to go. Jinki smiled at her and nodded before he watched he walk away. Once he was by himself, Jinki looked at his reflection in the mirror in front of him and sighed with a frown over his features. He wasn’t sure how he was going to do it but he had to get back on track and stop dragging everyone else with him. If he was going to drown, let it be him alone.

***

As the hours passed by, Jinki realized how hard it was to actually keep up with everything once he was practically left in the dust. His body remembered the dance moves, his vocal cords remembered the lyrics yet, his brain didn’t understand half of what was going on. And if he tried to consciously keep up with everything, he would just mess it up.

It was harder to talk with people, to socialize or even smile. His smiles, which were praised by so many were now a limp, awkward stretch of his facial muscles.

Plus, he couldn’t deny it, even if he wanted to, the fact that Jonghyun’s words were true. Even more when they were at talk shows and he just couldn’t help but notice, ‘Are they covering up for me?’

The realization was a horrible one. And now that he thought about it, he could barely remember any of the interviews or anything he had done for the last couple of weeks. Or was it months? Time was something he couldn’t comprehend these days anymore.

And by the end of their schedule Jinki felt like turning himself invisible. The shame of knowing he let the others down, even if they didn’t complain, was excruciating.

Not to forget the way the manager seemed to glance at him once in a while with obvious worry but a gleam of curiosity in them. Jinki didn’t know what was worse, the thought that his manager must be stressing out because of him or the fact that, most of the day, he kept his attention and concentration on what they were doing. It seemed that his mind’s absence was more obvious than he though since the members also noticed the slight change in him that day.

The only thing he was glad about was that it seemed to have lightened up the tense atmosphere that seemed to hang around them, something which Jinki hadn’t notice before.

So, when they arrived at the dorm, Jinki decided that he could redeem a bit of his behavior now that they had the rest of the night for themselves. He could try to bond with them, give them the quality time he’s been denying them for so long.

And, so, he did. Once inside the dorm, Jinki took off his shoes slower than the rest as he went over his head with his plan. Which consisted of “Hey” and “wanna watch TV?” but it was a lot more than what he had done in what seemed like ages now.

However, Jinki took more time gathering up his courage than he though because, when he fully entered the apartment and looked for the others, they were all already laid either on the floor or on the couch watching a rerun of some random variety program. They were probably waiting for their manager to come back with their food.

Jinki stood awkwardly at the hallway, out of the sight of the others. What should he do now? Should he ask if he can join them or should he just walk up to them and sit somewhere available? He didn’t know what to do…

Taking a deep breath, Jinki began to enter the room when he heard the soft whispers he hadn’t heard before. He quickly took a step back and leaned against the walk, his intention wasn’t to eavesdrop on them but he couldn’t help but heard his name in the conversation being whispered in the other room.

“…than other days. Even though he messed up a bit, you could tell he was trying”, he heard Kibum say.

“Yeah, I just hope he keeps at it. It’s frustrating to see him like that,” said Minho.

“Maybe he’ll open up later on because I sure hope he does,” Taemin said.

“Mm, we just have to keep waiting, just like we’ve done all these time,” Kibum concluded with a sad tone at the end.

Jinki closed his eyes and clutched at his chest with his left hand. It hurt so much to hear them talk like that, he was obviously affecting them. And it also hurt that Jonghyun didn’t express his opinion on the matter, not even a word.

What were these painful feelings he was dealing with?

The sound of footsteps followed by the rattle of keys was the cue for Jinki to sprint to his bedroom, not even glancing at the living room where the others were. He didn’t feel like eating after hearing them talk.

This time, as he lay on his bed and covered his head with his pillow to drown the noises and voices coming from the other side of the door, Jinki cried and cursed himself to sleep.

After realizing how fucked up things were becoming, or had become, because of him, Jinki barely slept at night.

Most nights he would just stare at the dark room or at Kibum and Minho sleep. Other nights he would either cry or try to make himself fall asleep, which he always failed to do.

That night, Jinki’s mind was restless. Unwanted feeling swelled inside his chest. He tried to contain them but the more he tried, the faster his resistance fell apart. The feelings continued to grow until all he could do was release a sour and bitter laugh in the darkened room.

His hands quickly flew to his mouth and, for a few seconds, he listened to make sure that the other two were still sleeping. It wasn’t his intension to laugh like that in the middle of the night and the last thing he wanted to do was wake them up. Jinki just didn’t know how to express himself.

It hurt too much to think and convey his feelings all the time but it hurt even more trying to act as if nothing was bothering him.

***

Jinki woke up one day to complete silence. At first he panicked a little and though that maybe they all finally decided that making him tag along with them was a complete waste of time. However, once his brain began to function properly, he remembered that they didn’t have a schedule that day.

Everyone had already decided what they were going to do that day outside the door and, since it was already past lunch, he was pretty sure they all had left a few hours ago.

It wasn’t his intension to sleep in for half the day but all of the restless nights were finally gaining up on him and he was pretty sure that the others noticed too, thus the reason that they didn’t make him tag along. It also made him come to the conclusion that one of them would be coming any time soon to check up on him.

Jinki pushed himself out of bed and made his way to the bathroom. He felt like taking a warm bath for hours, which was rare of him, but he just decided with a quick shower before brushing his teeth and heading to the living room.

He hadn’t watch television in a while and with the incident last time he tried, he didn’t feel like it that much. Still, this time he didn’t have much to do and he didn’t want the others to worry once they arrived to him still laid on his bed.

An hour or two of mindlessly watching TV, Jinki heard the front door open. He didn’t make much of an effort to move from his sitting crossed leg position on the floor in front of the TV and couch. He heard a pair of footsteps approach the living room until the two people emerged. Jinki looked over his shoulder and was about to greet whoever had arrived until he saw Jonghyun and Soo Eun enter.

Jonghyun smiled brightly, seen Jinki outside of his room. “Hyung, hi!” he said cheerfully as he made his way to the couch.

“Hello, Jinki oppa,” Soo Eun greeted with warm smile as she was guided by Jonghyun’s hand to the couch.

Jinki just barely nodded before turning his head around towards the TV again, his concentration out the window with no chance of getting it back.

He gripped his pants at the knees and closed his eyes, taking deep slow breaths as quiet as possible so they wouldn’t notice. Jinki still couldn’t get used to Soo Eun calling him oppa even though he was the one who told her to do so. He just wanted her to feel more comfortable with all of them but, sometimes, he felt like screaming when he heard her use it. Though, the truth was that the problem wasn’t the word or her but how they’re related.

“Hyung, do you mind changing the channel?” Jonghyun asked from behind him.

Jinki turned around slightly, his brain still processing his request when he got a glance of them hugging on the couch. His heart constricted and he cursed at himself for looking behind, knowing that they were together. It was only meant to hurt, no matter what he saw.

If the others were around, they were bound to tease the couple for their constant display of affection but Jinki could never play along for too long.

“You can have the remote, I was about to go read a book anyway. I’ve been wanting to catch up on it,” he answered the most leveled way possible as he got up before throwing him the remote. He gave them a small smile and disappeared down the hall and into his room without giving them a chance to react.

Once he as in the safety of his bedroom, he threw himself on his bed and grunted with frustration as tears formed in the corner of his eyes. Every day, Jinki was battling with himself but he knew he was slowly losing reason. And above all the things that hurt the most was the way Jonghyun ignored him all this time and how he suddenly smiled at him as if nothing ever happened. It hurt him deeply that, as he kept counting the days Jonghyun barely even looked at him, now he just smiles about and greets with his heart on his sleeves. A smile so bright and happy, Jinki didn’t know if it was truly because of him or if it was the effect Soo Eun had in him. And he was almost complete sure it was the later.

And even though Jinki should be pleased with the fact that Jonghyun was nowhere near of uncovering his secret, it troubled him deeply the lack of interest in Jonghyun’s part.

He didn’t know what was worse…

***

In his dream, there was what seemed like an endless lake in front of him, decorated with a thick fog. The still waters seem to be frozen by the unforgiving cold of winter. He didn’t really know why he was there, nor could he remember how he got there. All Jinki knew was that he had to get to the other side, as impossible as it seemed.

His legs moved on their own and, before he knew it, the land under his feet ended and now he stood on top of the unmoving waters. He didn’t know if the lake under him was supposed to feel like a deep emptiness but he didn’t dare stay there long to find out.

With careful steps, Jinki began walking towards the other side of the lake, which faded in the horizon with the fog. However, he was only able to carry himself half way there before he saw a porcelain mask appear in front of him. With a deep frown, Jinki leaned closer to examine the mask before he noticed that there was another mask at his left and at his right and another and another. A total of five porcelain masks surrounding him.

A cold shiver ran down his spine as he looked at them all closely. He didn’t know what they were nor from where they came from. His fingers twitched with the need to touch the masks and so he gave in to the impulse. Jinki raised his right hand and stretched it forward to grab the mask in front of him. However, his fingers never got to touch it as the masks lost whatever invisible hold they had and fell on the waters.

Jinki gasped as they fell and didn’t react quick enough to take them in his hands to prevent them crashing on the unmoving water or from sinking in them. However, the splashing sounds never came. He dared himself to look down at his feet and he could see the porcelain mask lay on top of the water, without disrupting it at all.

Jinki frowned in confusion as he looked at the mask before him, completely unharmed. As well as the second, and the third, and the forth, and-

CRASH

The loud crashing sound startled Jinki, making him turn around abruptly. There, on the surface of the deep dark waters, was the fifth porcelain mask. This one, unlike the other ones, was shattered into a million pieces. And they slowly began to sink into the lake’s oblivion.
