Strattera had lots of problematic side effects for me, and adderall just made me alert, not focused. I dunno if there are options that will achieve the save positive results as Ritalin but might lack the side effects.

I'm fairly sure that medication helps you better utilize your intelligence, but doesn't actually affect your IQ. Disparity between IQ and performance is one of the key indicators for ADHD.

Regardless, have you tried meds other than Ritalin? There might be some that come with fewer side effects for you.

ya, probably just IQ utilization, but it makes a difference on things like IQ tests.

I am going to echo asking your md for a different med. To be blunt, I was a jackass on ritalin. I have taken both concerta and vyvanase with good control of adhd symptoms and without being a jackass.

There's a nice article on dealing with stimulant side-effects, "Ritalin Helps, but What About the Side Effects?" by Carol Watkins and Glenn Brynes (both psychiatrists/MDs).

Before switching to a different med altogether (which may be useful, or may not be), also consider changing the dose and/or timing and/or duration (e.g. short- or long-acting) of the methylphenidate.

If you are anxious and over-focused, is it possible a somewhat smaller dose might still provide enough benefit without causing problems? If the methylphenidate is causing you new sleep problems, could you take your last dose earlier in the day?

Good luck sorting things out!

I am able to take my meds when I need them and not take them all the time. Can you use the ritalin during days/times when you need to be more focused and productive, but not constantly? Maybe you're taking it too late in the day...maybe just the wrong timing. When my adderall wears off I have a weird jittery phase during which it would be impossible to fall asleep...before or after and I'm fine, though.

I'm switching to this strategy- taking the drugs on certain days and avoiding them on others. Hoping this helps with the side effects. Thanks.
