I'd have to see the pattern. You're essentially making triangles. They may want you to start with a different color for each row of triangles. Read through the instructions completely, and it may make more sense. A good tutorial is Knitty's Danica.

Take an hour and make one of these, even if you end up frogging it. It will give you a very clear understanding of how entrelac works.
