intarsia and knots?

I've started making the bubbles blankie in Mission Falls 1824 (superwash) wool and it's my first attempt at intarsia.

I apologize in advance if this is too basic a question, but the instructions in the book, the knittinghelp.com intarsia video, and some basic googling have failed to answer my question, so I turn to you, advanced knitters ( Read more... )

I usually put in a square knot when I first join, then untie it when I go back to weave the ends in. I almost always need to adjust the tension a bit at the start and/or edge of intarsia, so I prefer to weave the ends in over knitting them in. For superwash I'd weave for at least 2-3 inches just in case, but it should stay fairly well.

Hmm... good point with the adjusting the tension later. It hadn't occurred to me to both use the knot and not use the knot. Thanks!

I've never had my superwash wools come unravelled; for that matter, I havn't had acrylic intarsia come unravelled either, so I'd say you're fine weaving in ends. I can't bring myself to knot the new yarns, either.

I haven't done tons of knitting with wool in general, aside from sock yarns, and there aren't many ends to deal with in a sock.... thanks for teh advice!
