First a little show and tell -- recently finished, Latvian socks from Nancy Bush's Knitting Folk Socks (please forgive pet-interference in the photo

I don't think two strands of sport weight would sub for bulky. I recently doubled a worsted weight and it was probably pretty close to a bulky. (Single strand I knit on US7 needles, double strand on US9.)
Thanks much! I'm ordering online and dislike the (dismally small) color palette for Knitpicks Wool of the Andes -- but the Telemark has some spiffy colors... Looks like I ought to be thinking Merino Style (dk) or worsted WotA -- both have many lovely options. (Thinking cheap for a first felting project.)
If you're felting, you (generally) don't need to be quite as concerned about hitting the exact gauge the pattern calls for. Just be aware that heavier weight yarns result in a thicker, stiffer felt. WoTA is great for felting.
Riiiiight. True story. My main concern here is actually thickness. I'm making pot-holders and I want to make sure I've got a sturdy enough fabric -- but not too stiff (thanks for pointing that out). Thankfully, at $1.99 a skein, at worst this'll be a cheaper mistake than renting a bad movie!
Great-looking socks, and thanks for the modifications. Can you tell us how much yarn you used, approxmiately (yards or meters)? I really prefer tall socks, but I don't yet have a good sense of how much they take.
Oh yeah, forgot to add that. I used 2 and a little over a half of the third 50g/206m skein. For me (5'5" with size 7 feet) 150g of standard sock-weight yarn is always more than enough. If I were buying yarn with puny yardage and planned all-over cables I might get 200g.
I just made a sweater that called for bulky weight. I substituted 2 strands of Merino Style (Knitpicks), which is a DK/light worsted. It depends on your gauge, though.
I had my eye on the Merino Style -- nice colors and they mention that it felts well and makes a nice soft felted fabric. After checking Elann, though, I see they have a perfect bulky yarn. Elann to the rescue!
