I'd like to duplicate the red cap that Mathilda wears in the movie "The Professional". From screencaps, it looks like I could get something close by knitting the top first, then flipping it upside down and using crochet to get the 'lace' detailing, then finishing with a knitted seed stitch brim.

You could possibly knit it as if doing the lace section as if you were knitting a couple of rows worth of button holes: [*k3, bo3* for a row, then *k3, co3* for a row, k a row] - of course you'd arrange it to where it's in seed stitch., too.

That's my 2 cents. Good luck! (I love that movie, btw)

It looked familiar, so I looked up some of my books. I think it could be a simplified version of "Hyacinth blossom stitch" from The Harmony Guides: 440 More Knitting Stitches, Vol 3, 1998.

I googled it, and no pictures online unfortunately, but I did find this link where somebody writes out the directions: http://www.craftyarncouncil.com/cyca-forum/read.php?1,16056

Try swatching from those directions and see what you think?

I'll give it a try, but I do also like the full-crochet version that someone else linked below, even though I generally prefer knitting to crocheting.

It looks to me like the entire hat is crocheted. Here is where someone duplicated in crochet and was kind enough to write out their pattern: http://www.joyfulabode.com/blog/2007/09/15/professional-hat/

No advice from me on the hat but man, I love this movie.

It kind of reminds me of the big holes in the first few rows of the Hemlock Ring blanket - if I remember right, it's something like "yo seven times in one stitch" and then on the next round you knit each of those as a separate stitch - obviously you'd have to decrease somewhere else to keep everything even.

Wait, it's not yo seven times in one stitch, it's like one YO but you wrap the yarn around seven times, I'm stupid today.
