problems following a lace chart

Jul 09, 2010 01:06

I'm having trouble with a pattern. I've never followed a lace chart before (I've done plenty of lace, just not using a chart). The pattern is from Luxury Yarn One-Skein Wonders-- pg. 220-221, Lacy Leaf Alpaca-Angora Hat. I looked up corrections and there aren't any, however there are plenty for other patterns in the book (over 1/4 of the patterns ( Read more... )

The errata's at http://www.storey.com/correct_book.php?isbn=9781603420792

I hope that helps. I've not knitted this before; I just looked it up on Ravelry.

Glad to see there's an errata, because I get 16 sts between markers too, and it *has* to be 85 to factor evenly into 85.

Thanks. Yeah, I've looked at that (sorry, should've been clearer), but my pattern is one of the few that isn't actually listed with corrections. :(

Oh man, I love Ravelry. :)

It appears that there's an updated chart for that pattern. Click here for the PDF.

Oh my gosh-- thanks! I looked at the errata for an hour and somehow missed it.

Oh, duh-- just realized I have my find toolbar set to match case. That's why I couldn't find it before.

Thanks! My brain was not working and I searched that same page for hours earlier.

YEAH it is-- makes me happy I'm just borrowing it from a friend. Geesh!

I just hit CTRL-F (or whatever your computer's find option is) and searched for the word "leaf." It was the second item listed.

Wow, what's up with the One-Skein Wonders books? When I was a novice knitter, I bought a different one and tried working a pattern several times until someone suggested I check for errata (first time I'd heard such a thing). There were over 114 errata in that book! I threw the book away (didn't want to subject anyone else to the same nightmare) and have never looked at another One-Skein Wonder book again. And I see it was probably a good idea. ;)

Yeah, they kinda suck! I don't own any, but my friend (whom I'm borrowing this one from) owns 2 or 3 of them. I think she's only ever knitted one thing from them and I'll be sure to tell her about all the mistakes I found out about. She already gets frustrated with them because a lot of the patterns are not exactly one-skein.

I can't believe they'd let this go to print like this! One or two mistakes, okay, but this many?? I'm somewhat amused by this because just the other day some of my friends and I were talking about collaborating on a book and were discussing the importance of having people test our patterns before publishing. If I were ever going to buy another knitting book again, I'd be sure to check the errata first!

From what I understand about the publishing world, it's not always the pattern author's fault. Many times, the mistakes are introduced when the patterns are reformatted and the charts recreated for the book. Not all copy-editors are created equal. :)
