a few questions on felting

So I'm in the middle of making some felted mittens for a friend. I want to embroider them with some extremely simple Jacobean style flowers, and I have a few questions on the specifics

My usual bit of advice would be to make a swatch and try it out.

Oh dur, thanks :) it sounds simple, but I don't have to make test swatches for socks or baby blankets, so I forget about it pretty quickly.

You could always needlefelt the flowers onto the mittens!

Also, lots of people trim their felted knits. If you have a sweater shaver, that would work superbly.

Interesting, thank you! I have to test smartly, though, because I only have enough yarn for 2 swatches. I had hoped to use them to salvage the cuffs (by cutting off the bad ones & just knitting new ones on, unfelted). Sigh. Oh, maybe I'll cut them off anyway and use them for the test swatches!
