I See The World Through High Cheekbones and Small Eyes

Nov 01, 2005 18:17

As I sat down today at the State Library of NSW, this girl whispered to her friend in Mandarin, "He's Korean", pointing to me. This happens to me wherever I go. The speculation towards my ethnicity does not end with looking Korean; my face encompasses the whole East Asian continent. (Yes, I know, I have a big face) You see, Koreans don't see me as ( Read more... )

From memory you once told me that your family was from Northern China, southern Russia? I forgot... anyway, I know that's not the reason behind the post.

But don't you wish you were born overseas so you could escape this fucked up country?

meh...

James, I don't think this place is as fucked up as everywhere else in the world. What do you think is the reason behind my post?

btw my family are from Beijing and we're quite multi-cultural. We have Russians, Italians, and Anglo Australians in my family. My godmother is Egyptian. Interracial marriages are not a problem but I'm not sure how well same-sex marriages would go down.

My other two suspected queer relatives are both not married. One lives in Bathurst and is studying Policing at CSU. The other works in the IT dept. for Delloite in Shanghai. She's such a lesbian but so much fun! If I ever moved to Shanghai, I'd live with her. I think it would be cool to live in Shanghai.

I have never experienced that racism being an anglo-celtic person. I would find it highly offensive.

I thought you were in Chatswood. I think you would find M. Butterfly at the Zenith theatre really interesting. The adult price is $22 and I am sure that there is a student discount. It is really an excellent play. If you know the story or Madame Butterfly, imagine if the roles had been reversed - an American woman marrying a Japanese sailor who never came back and who had the opportunity or marrying a Kennedy. Would we be thinking in terms of a submissive Asian woman, or thinking that the white woman was crazy?

It is very interesting and well worth going to see. I know you would appreciate it and I would be interested in your comments.

There's lots of racism from within the Asian community. Chinese people are blatantly racist towards "Blacks" and Indians "smell like curry". "Blacks" is also a term to describe the "undesirables" such as Hobos, and illegal immigrants.

Have you seen www.sexualracismsux.com? It talks about the sexual hierarchy on the gay scene. I know a few gay asians that have a chip on their shoulder due to the sexual racism that they have felt ( ... )

It's ok to rant, that's what personal journals are for. By the way, I'm going to add you to my friends list, if you don't mind. This post reminds me of an entry my sister just wrote in her LJ. I know how you feel about being Australian. Though I am of Chinese descent I also feel that I am American, and don't feel comfortable claiming to be Chinese without adding the hyphenation -American to the end of it.

P.S. The Sage she's talking about is Confucius, since we are direct descendents of his.

Thanks for adding me and letting me read your sister's post. I don't feel comfortable commenting on her journal. Does she know you're gay?

I find it hard explaining in Mandarin to Chinese people that I don't consider China as the motherland. My Mandarin vocabulary is limited and doesn't allow me to fully express myself but I'm working on it :P.

Yes I am out to her. In Mandarin, I only know a few words and how to count. In Cantonese I know a little bit more, but my vocabulary is not much beyond a five year old's, so don't feel bad.
