[499] Movies: Resident Evil: Retribution

Oct 16, 2012 00:13

Finally saw Resident Evil: Retribution. Was so excited to watch this movie but since my country is a big failure, they didn’t even show it here so we had to drive to Germany to watch it. Even if it was far from perfect, I still didn’t regret driving so far to see it.

THE PROS

- Seeing some old and favourite characters again. Carlos, Rain, Jill… it was nice to see them back in action. And they also got more screen time than I thought they would! Especially Rain which makes me happy. Carlos could have talked more though ;A; he was just standing there later on shooting and being useless. Still, I loved the beginning where he and Alice were a couple. So cute!
- The new characters, Leon, Barry and Ada. I was the most excited to see Leon in action of course. I didn’t really like his look at first, especially on the pictures I saw but it was totally ok in the movie. He looked way better in motion. Barry didn’t have much to say or do, except for having one epic death scene.
- I just wanted to scream: EEEEEYYYY SEXYYYY BOOOOYYYYS every single time the guys were being awesome on screen.
- The fights are impressive and really entertaining to watch. I go and watch this movie mainly to be entertained and it definitely did that.
- The different parts in Tokyo, New York, etc. I liked that idea and was nice to see a few more settings than just the prison like in the previous movie.
- I was afraid that the entire movie would end up being a flashback/time travel thing a bit like in Lost but it wasn’t. That would have been confusing but after seeing the trailers, it’s really what I thought would happen. Guess they really planned that out nicely.
- LEON AND ADA. GROSS SOBBING. The way he always asked after her, the way he knew that she would still be alive, the way he was just running to her and putting his jacket over her… ASDFGHJKL; and at the end in the helicopter… lmao. It was adorable. He should have said: WOMEN. HE SHOULD HAVE. It would have been my movie of the year then.
- The zombie with the chainsaw approaching Leon. Totally reminding of the 4th game.
- The entire cast. I love them. Have been watching behind the scenes videos and I’m screaming. Way too adorable. Michelle is just my girl, Oded should be in every movie and every show ever made, Kevin, well he is in basically everything I watch so (but never forget Keamyyyyy) and Shawn as Wesker, well I don't say no.
- Johann Urb as Leon. Yep, fangirl right here. I’ve read many people say that Jensen Ackles would have made a perfect Leon… I have to say, I LIKED the idea because he might look like him with longer hair. But you know what I wouldn’t like? The Ackles fangirls shitting themselves and watching this movie because of him and just imagine the drama on the internet. OH GOD NO. That's why I'm glad they picked someone who isn't too famous.
- Reading this again and seeing that my priorities are basically Leon’s look and the entire cast. OOPS.
- And since I love them so much, here a nice picture:

Johann and his scruff and the glasses and just everything... asdfghjkl; NOPE. Can't deal with it.

THE CONS

Never thought I could even be so critical towards a franchise I like. But there were just too many flaws in this one…

- My wife is awesome: the movie part 5. Sometimes I really wonder why there are even other characters in this movie. Alice is the only one who matters and she could totally fit in any other action/horror movie franchise.
- Too much slowmo kills the slowmo. Or something like that. It's an awesome effect, yes, but if every single time a bullet is flying around they show this in slowmo for 30 seconds... really now? But I guess they movie would have only lasted an hour if they had removed all of these parts.
- I kind of liked the idea of them being trapped down there and trying to escape. That was still ok. But I just lost it when we found out that the Red Queen was behind this AND WESKER HIMSELF WANTED TO HELP RESCUING ALICE. WHAT. I mean come on, we are talking about Wesker here. And the Red Queen, seriously? Creepy fucking computer kid. I just can’t. I’m sure they were out of ideas like: ‘ohhh who could be the main villain in this one again? Wesker? Noooope. We can’t pick someone from the 6th game, so let’s just take someone… from our previous movies!! YES PERFECT.’ It might have made a bit of sense but idk. I wasn’t really glad they picked her again.
- That also leads me to the point that the scheme of this movie, totally reminded me of the first one. That’s maybe not too bad, but idk. I feel like all they have been doing in the last 3 movies is escape from places. Ok, it’s the zombie apocalypse and all that stuff and you can’t stay at one place forever but idk.
- Ada, even if I have absolutely nothing against the actress, I still think she could have been much better. She was just too innocent here which doesn’t really fit.
- Yes, I still have to comment on that: Leon’s hair. As said before, he looks way better in action but come on, it looked like he hadn’t washed it in days and it was too long. They could have changed it at least a bit. But all in all, I always have the impression that all the money is being spend in making Alice look as awesome as possible, and the other costumes look totally cheap. I’m sure cosplayers could do a better job.
- The enemies: ok the Executioners looked nice, really, but we already saw him in the other one. There are tons of known enemies in the games, you couldn’t have picked another one, could you? Also the Licker, are they not supposed to be smaller and in large groups? Or at least that’s what I remember from the 5th game. That shit traumatized me... I mean the part in the game... ugh so long and annoying.
- Excuse me, but WHERE WAS CHRIS AND CLAIRE? I don’t give a fuck if the actors were busy or something. But no explanation, just like that? If they show up in the next one again, I hope they have a good explanation on why they were not around in this movie.
- Alice VS Jill. Giiiiirl you can kill hundreds of zombies, do the craziest shit AND IT TOOK YOU AN ENTIRE MOVIE TO FIND OUT THAT YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THAT THING ON JILL’S CHEST SO THAT SHE BECOMES NORMAL AGAIN??
- The Rain fight at the end… can we just leave her alone now? NO? I just hate how she ended up being the big last boss fight if I can say it like that. It should have been someone else, not her. (It wasn’t a bad fight, not saying that because I did enjoy it. I just felt really bad for Rain.)
- Also, the fights reminded me of Mortal Kombat, like seriously, do you really need to show how they break their bones that way in the movie?
- No idea how Alice and Leon were still able to get up after that fight but I’m still happy for them.
- Of course, killing Barry wasn’t enough. Let’s just kill another awesome character I really started liking after Carlos died. Poor Luther, you will be missed.
- The ending: Alice gets her powers back. FOR REAL NOW? COME ON. That’s already what I hated about the two other movies: Alice gets cloned, uses her army in Afterlife and like 10 fucking minutes later, they all get killed and that’s it. Really? They were planning this whole clone thing for 2 movies and it ends so quickly? Here again, she gets awesome in the first ones, loses her powers and gets them back again so easily? Just because Wesker needs backup? And how the fuck did they even build this whole fort around the white house? What is all of this and where do all of these bad guys come from? Guess I’ll have to wait two more years to know that. Since it usually takes them 2 years to release a new one.

Sometimes, I wonder what I love so much about these movies. I know they have flaws and could be so much better but… I guess it’s this whole ‘let’s fight together in a group’ kind of thing. Like there was Carlos, Luther, Chris, Leon, Barry, Rain, etc etc. characters I do really like. I wish that at least Chris and Leon would have been more developed, since they are popular characters. But seeing your favorite characters again even if they are supposed to be dead is still nice and this movie was like a big family reuinon. That’s mainly the one thing I just love about the movies.

Now that this is done, I need to finish Resident Evil 6. I'm taking my time and I think I'll finish Chris' campaign later.
