Granted, I'm only forty minutes in, but seriously--wtf? Why didn't I go see this in the theater?

Same reason no one else did. The trailer sucked.
They tried to target the masses while it is more of an arthouse film, and in turn turned off the arthouse crowd with the sex-centric trailer...then the few of the people intrigued by the trailer didn't like it because it was an arthouse film and not softcore porn. I think I got it all covered.
