I'm living with my best friend (John). John has a friend name Rob who is, imo, pretty sketchy and has a history of being a people user. Rob does a lot of drugs, which doesn't particularly bother me, but it is important to this story

it turned out rob got in contact with john because he was in trouble/it was an emergency. i just so happened to see the google voice transcripts of them playing phone tag for a couple of days trying to get a hold of one another. i explained my feelings to john -- mostly that i felt... betrayed, in a loose sense of the word... that he never mentioned getting back in contact with rob and that i'd just like to know if they're going to be friends after this point. he clarified no, and said that he felt a sense of responsibility because he still cared for rob and wanted him to be OK. we hashed out the details and now i know where he stands, but thanks for reminding me to not make it about myself. :)

Has the possibility that Rob just randomly left a message to John crossed your mind? Maybe John didn't initiate contact.

Yup, it had -- I clarified and Rob initiated contact. John was contacting him back, but he didn't give me a heads up about it.
