What's worse asking him out and worse case scenario he says no, best case scenario he says yes and you have a wonderful time, OR sitting around wondering what he would say if you did, day dreaming but never finding a for sure answer and risk losing an awesome chance at something great?
If you're there the next time he gets off his shift, why don't you ask him what his plans are for later? And then say your friend is having a partyletsgo/invite him to grab something to eat/etc. If he says he's busy, you can always say "Oh, I wanted to see if you wanted to [blank]" and use his reaction to gauge how into you he is?
