CHARACTER NAME: Karen Starr (Power Girl)
FANDOM: DC Comics
CANON: Power Girl #8, right about the end when she’s returning to her apartment.
WHAT THEY LOST: Her super and freeze breath. These are just a couple of her powerful abilities but Karen’s never liked being de-powered in any way. Kryptonian in a magical castle that took away two abilities? Unnerving. It’ll only pain her throat if she tries to use them.

ABOUT THE CHARACTER: Born in an alternate universe Krypton, Kara Zor-L was sent through space and toward Earth after the planet met its demise as the last daughter of Krypton. Little did anyone know she would not be the last Kryptonian, as she would meet her cousin Superman on Earth and when more universes were discovered, she would meet others such as Superman from Earth-One (or New Earth as we the audience call it) and Supergirl, something that would shake her for the longest time. After the events of Crisis, Karen loses her entire universe yet somehow, she continues to exist. Was it deliberate or an accident? She might never know but it has nagged at her and been a cause for great concern and painful memories for her. She’s tough and admittedly bad at “girl talk” but deep down, she feels just as lost as anyone else. Losing her best friend, Huntress, as well as Kal-L, his wife Lois and everything on Earth-Two all at once was too much to handle at once. She’ll act like it doesn’t bother her but those who are close to her or she’s willing to open to know she’s never been able to deal with it properly, not when her past has haunted her continuously.

Not knowing peace and quiet is the definition of Karen Starr and Power Girl’s life. She’s well aware it comes with the job description but it doesn’t stop her from cracking a comment or two every now and then about how she’d love to sleep in instead. (And she doesn’t even require that, either.) As much as she’ll roll her eyes at the latest villain of the week destroying Manhattan or attempting to blow up the planet, she gets into gear and does what’s needed: stopping the bad guy and keeping innocent civilians safe. Like the majority of the DCU heroes, Power Girl does not kill and is adamant about crossing that line. To her, it’s not just about whether they - the good guys - have this higher power to play judge, jury and executioner but to show the world around them that no one has that sort of power. As brute and eager to fight as she is, PG sees the world around her as very impressionable and those with powers like her need to make good use of their actions. When Ultra-Humanite, in Terra’s body, questions why they cannot just kill a bad guy, she is stern in her explanation: because even villains are people. They may be violent, psychotic or plain evil but many of them are damaged and they need help. She accidentally burns Humanite when he attempts to hold Manhattan hostage but instead of throwing him in a prison to rot away, she sends him to a facility where they will hold him but also attempt to treat him. Even when he implants his brain into Terra’s body, PG decidedly gives him a second chance at a normal life when the technology in Strata is able to return him to his original body, without the psychological illnesses he had.

However, people don’t often see this softer, logical side to Karen. This isn’t necessarily their fault; she’s put up walls to keep herself closed off from others. Helena once told her that nobody knew anything about her, to which she replied, “I know.” She’s got a quick temper and it’s easy to get her mad but it’s not hard to win her favour either. Vartox endangers her entire planet but by the end, she is on decent terms with him. Maybe not willingly... but she certainly doesn’t hate him!

But she’s not all gruff and tough, she’s got a light-hearted side, too. She enjoys having girls’ nights out, shopping, teasing those around her and she’s big on family. Despite what she’s said about not being excellent at “girl talk” or “general talk”, Karen has made many young heroines and people feel confident about themselves. Maybe because she knows how it feels but in the past, she’s given Stargirl, Terra and a couple of other JSA members reassurance. Both Superman’s and the JSA mean a lot to her, striking at them is taking a hit at her which she won’t stand for. When you attack her home, it gets personal and ugly with Karen. She’s not widely known for it but she can hold grudges for a long time, as seen with Barbara and Kara. They both made her feel powerless, replaceable and people were counting on her when she worked with them. While she can behave aggressively and tell it right to your face that she doesn’t like you, Karen can be rather passive aggressive toward Barbara, making sneaking remarks about her to Dinah.

It’s not hard to please or anger her, it really all depends on the situation and minding your manners with her. In the midst of battle, she’s ‘beat up first and ask questions later’, but outside that field? She’s one of the more brilliant minds in the JSA, a notable scientist (though she has stated she prefers the other scientist/superheroes to deal with that when it comes to crime fighting) and businesswoman and for a short-lived time, chairwoman of the JSA before they split apart. Now she acts as one of the group leaders for the JSA All-Stars. Needless to say, Karen knows what she’s doing when she leads a group, putting aside most of her own personal tactics to get a group to work together and getting the job done. She can command authority and respect, too, when it’s earned.

Nevertheless, Karen is a relatively laidback woman when she doesn’t have the fate of the world on her shoulders. Her past may be convoluted and her current life messy with two JSA teams, Kal, Kara and keeping and eye on her company yet it doesn’t tend to stop her from looking forward to another day. She knows there’s a lot she hasn’t come to terms with but Karen figures maybe someday, she’ll be okay with that.

THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE:

Despite every single building she flies past, Karen’s memory doesn’t pick up on anything remotely familiar in the area. These buildings are old and some aren’t even furnished on the inside when she peaks in with her X-ray vision. She’s done a recon of the entire town in a matter of seconds and is positive she is not in the good ol’ US of A anymore. However, there are no signs or anything to point out where exactly she is either. Does this town even have a name?

“But I think if I were to crack that old Kansas reference, someone out there would be a nickel richer.” She sighs and descends onto a rooftop, keeping a hand on the dress she borrowed from Vartox so it doesn’t rise up and expose her lack of - “That would be something. ‘Power Girl pulls a Paris Hilton! Exclusive only on page six.’”

She sighs and quickly slips into her costume, while trying to figure out what exactly has happened. How it happened. The last event she recalls was heading down, back to her apartment after her surprisingly pleasant dinner with Vartox.

That moronic, over-confident, space baboon who has an irritating habit of referring to himself in third person.

She taps her chin, thoughtful but also skeptical. Vartox could not have done this. No, he liked to make a big commotion of things and this was done somehow without Karen noticing she was no longer in Manhattan. Did she do this to herself? Please, please don’t tell me my powers are going out of whack again.

Without wasting another moment, she flies back into the air, clothes tucked under her arm and that’s when she notices the sky above her. When the clouds shift and the moon barely peeks from behind it, she catches the blue hue it has and lets out a soft gasp. The moon is... blue?

“Creepy... but beautiful,” she has to admit.

FIRST-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE:

[ soaring across the sky is a woman in a strange and possibly distracting costume. she halts when she nears the castle, looking back over her shoulder for a moment ]

This isn’t the first time I’ve found myself in another place without any idea how I even got here but so far it beats what happened the last time. [ being chased by “friends” and an alternate version of herself and then tortured with kryptonite. fun times... ]

[ she heads down toward the roof, noticing many lights are still turned on. a castle that runs on electricity? no, she’s not even going to ask right now. ]

And all I wanted was a good night’s rest. Can’t I ever get even an hour of peace and quiet without something interrupting me mid-thought? [ a sigh and she moves faster, landing on the roof ]

Let’s see who’s home.

INTENT:

Aaaand another character I missed playing. Yeah, I chickened out last time with her but I always did regret dropping her. I just didn’t want to re-app her right away and lose her voice or anything. Another thing that’s always bugged me was that I felt I wasn’t capturing her family issues right with Clark and had her... give in too easily to the thought of happy times with him? BUT THEN I ALWAYS FELT HORRIBLE FOR DROPPING HIS AU COUSIN. :( Still, she’s a character I did enjoy playing because while she could be sarcastic and had that temper, she was a character who I could throw around at almost anyone. I miss having another character who could socialize with others outside their canons and not be super awkward with them and another character who I could toss at events like expeditions or other World Plots so I can mix it up a little.
