I haven't posted in here except to comment on others' posts for quite a while, so I thought I'd pop my head up to let folks know I'm still upright, breathing and ambulatory

Hi Aearwen. Good to hear from you. Uh, home repair issues. I've had enough of them in my time. I had no idea copper pipes were a bad idea.
Re: writing wise. I've been inspired since Himring invited me to the SWG Discord site. Are you on there? An active interesting group.

Yeah. Evidently natural gas is corrosive to copper, which is why I had a fairly large NUMBER of leaks rather than just one big gusher. Took the repair guy the better part of a day crawling under my house chasing them all down. And yes, my house is technically on stilts - there's a roughly 3 ft crawlway between the bottom of the floorboards and the actual surface of the ground. Plenty of room to move around - provided one doesn't mind sharing space with black widow spiders... *shudder*
