Mentally Ill?

This is actually freaking me the fuck out.

It's a list of symptoms for a mental disorder that pretty much fits me perfectly. To a fucking tee. I wonder if it's worth going and getting officially diagnosed. I mean, there's not actually much you can do about Asperger Syndrome, beyond 'show them how to interact with other humans, because they won't ( Read more... )

They make fun of people who self-diagnose Asperger's on the Internet...

(Seriously, people with autism spectrum disorders are impaired. You talk and act like a normal person. An awkward person, maybe, but only enough to make you a geek, not mentally disordered. People with Asperger's tend to be very strange and not even fully realize it. I really don't think you have it.)

I've actually read a lot of people who say that Asperger's itself is just normal variation in personality, because most people who have it can function normally but are just incredibly awkward and weird.

I'm not really self-diagnosing, but it was pretty freaky to read that. Like 'hey, here's a mental disorder that matches all of your bizarre personality traits!'

We thought our son had this for a while, but his language delays (though minor) make the doctor's lean more towards High-functioning Autism instead. When we asked one of the first specialists he saw if he was on the Autism Spectrum, the doctor replied, "Everybody's on the spectrum."

Don't freak out too much. Thomas Jefferson is one of many famous successful people suspected to have had Aspergers and even Bill Gates may have the syndrome (whatever you may think of him, he has had some success in his life), so this doesn't limit you at all. Hopefully, if you do decide to get yourself a diagnosis, it will provide you some comfort and maybe some tools (besides drinking) to manage your more difficult periods.

That's the thing with the Autism Spectrum--it covers everything from 'severely impaired' to 'able to function but really weird'.

I don't know if I actually could be diagnosed with it, but it was still a little disturbing to read.
