Everyone does not have the right to be happy. People who think this are (in my experience, at least) almost always the sort of people who think they have the right to be happy at the expense of other people.

I saw an interview with Maria Shriver once where she basically said that Arnold told her that she shouldn't count on him to make her happy. I thought it was a really interesting way to court someone, to note that loving someone doesn't mean you have to make them happy (or that you even can).

One of the things that attracted me to my husband right off the bat was the fact that he didn't need me to make him happy. If he never met me, he still would have a good life and that was just--an enormous relief, in so many ways.
