Some woods are prone to cracking. You can dip the ends in wax to help prevent it (not a perfect solution) and you can just use less force, though you might have to re-tighten regularly as you turn. Watch for wobble and tighten only in small increments.

Did you cut the cross on the end? It shouldn't take that much pressure to engage. (We'll talk this weekend.)

What were you making with the dowels?

What are dip pens? Is this the writing utensil that you dip in ink?

12000 micron grade, cool! I bet that feels really nice in the hand.

The dowels were to be more pens. And yes dip pens are what you use for calligraphy. They have an insert that let's you change nibs for different effects.

The 12000 micron gives a satin to medium gloss finish with no oils or any varnishes.
