a beautiful song from RENT, I really love Daphne's voice on this recording so sorry for no exciting video. I will make up for it with the next one.
My exciting videos? More Mimi with Out Tonight. The original Mimi, Daphne Rubin-Vega, and then a hot as hell performance from the Mimi in the Korean production! I was looking up foreign versions of RENT and was pleasantly surprised by this Korean Mimi! She can sing, and damn, can she move.
first Daphne for reference. I am a Daphne fan, always have been. I think Rosario was great for the movie, Daphne was one of the older members of the original cast and she was pregnant and I don't know if she would've done as awesome on screen as on stage, so I don't mind they replaced her for the movie. But she remains one of the most unique voices I've ever heard and I think she brings the right attitude to Mimi, and I think she should get loads of accolades and credit for the work she did developing the character. Her Mimi can be very hard (watch her motions on all the scars of the nevers and maybes...one tough ass junkie...and by the way doesn't "all the scars of the nevers and maybes" sound like a line from a Pumpkins song :D) but I think that makes the vulnerability in songs like Without You and her trying to be happy in the midst of her having AIDS all the more poignant. She makes you love Mimi even though she does make it clear that Mimi is a hot mess and very troubled - I don't know if any other Mimi has quite achieved that like her.
