I'm coming to realize that I can't bring myself to type without decorating what I'm saying with various unnecessary forms of punctuation. I can go back and edit out smileys and exclamation points, but I always feel like I'm coming off as unfriendly if I'm not being...expressive

omg, no i'm the same way. I feel like if someone ISNT using emotes, I usually have no idea how they want me to take their message, or they're just really BLAAH~ So I also have the habit of just sticking a smilie at the end of stuff, when I notice how much I do it too, its like IS THIS ANNOYING? PROBABLY? D: Truth is, I don't care if I see it on other people's stuff. So maybe it doesn't matter as much as we think if we do it "too much".

I think it depends on what person and what emoticions

I used to use xD constantly when I was like 16 but I find it kind of obnoxious now

but I use loads of c: and :/ and 8U and :) and }8) and 8D (when very excited!) and stuff now

sometimes people prefer a "rofl" or ", haha" or "lol" to a 8D though

but yeah it's weird to have conversations with people online and them give no clue as to their reactions or expressions

I don't expect people to use emotes, but even if I get a million of them it never bothers me. However, I've been raged at for not being all *~SUPER HAPPY DESUDESUDESU~* just because I don't use them all the time -_- I get asked every five minutes "are you okay? Are you mad at me?" & it makes me want to bash my head against a wall. I use them probably 79% of the time.
More often, instead of emotes, I use *action/expression* within asterisks.. sort of like constant roleplaying. I dunno what you'd call that.. text-emote? xD <-- I use that, (; , :3, & D: most often. Or :DDDD when I'm being obnoxious on purpose.
