Hawaii, Day Three

Today we progress to Day Three of the great descent upon Hawaii 2008. Today is our last full day in Wailea

7 am - I get up and go on a run. Joe, Mike, and Joe’s dad are all in the kitchen getting ready for an exciting golf outing. I run along the path that winds between the resorts, up some cliffs, and into a hotel. Joe’s mom has told me that if I go through the hotel’s parking lot, I’ll get to a road with some beautiful houses.

I run along the road, which has nice big hills and notice all the amazing beachfront mansions. They are nice, but I don’t want to own one someday. I also notice the one open beach access left - a public park with very prominent “No Camping” signs. I suppose those signs don’t apply to all the people already camping there. I try not to think about the huge disparities in Hawaiian society - those that are natives have the right to the beach but the richer non-native people can restrict the access. Don’t tell me about self-determination - I know the US doesn’t have the best track record when it comes to treating non-European native inhabitants well.

9 am - Kellie, Connor, and I go to the beach. I take tons of pictures of them - they are so cute. I have two that I like - one that everyone else thinks is a great picture, one that I think really captures it. You be the judge.

Kellie and Connor are incredibly fair-skinned people

I just think this photo is sweet.

10 am - I go for a long walk along the walkway taking pictures of the different resorts. It is really beautiful out, the weather is perfect, and the pictures turn out great!

A beautiful flower!

View of some really super-nice condos on a cliff overlooking the beach at the Grand Wailea, and Molokini.

Noon - I return to the condo and meet Joe for lunch.

2 pm - Joe and I head to Kihei for the afternoon. When Joe was younger, his family would stay in Kihei instead of Wailea as it was more reasonably priced. Our mission is to scope out some bars for the evening, when Bob, Mike, Kellie, Joe, and I are going to have a short night out. We drive up and down the strip for a bit and then get out and do some walking. It is very windy and the sand blows all over us. We stop in a store and get some wine and some postcards. We continue walking down the strip and a guy leans out his car window and yells at us
“Remember, safe sex is good sex!”

We stop by the grocery store to get ham for Joe’s mom and head back to Wailea.

5 pm - Joe and I make ourselves a little romantic appetizer of chips and salsa and wine out on the back deck. Joe gets drafted to grill hamburgers for the family.

7 pm - Joe, Mike, Kellie, Bob, and I head over to Kihei to visit one of the bars we noticed. It is a little restaurant/bar type place that is on the strip. We get Mai Tais (my official drink of the week) and relax around the bar. A bouncer comes up and re-cards me because I look young. Who knew?

8 pm - Bob says he doesn’t like the bar and it isn’t what he was looking for so we decide to go back to the resort and go to one of the bars in the resort.

9 pm - We finally make it to the bar at the Grand Wailea. Bob has elected not to join us. We order drinks for last call and sit and sip. They are delicious but pricey. Still it is quite fun to sit in the fancy resort and sip drinks and chat. I know Mike and Kellie are enjoying a night out while Joe’s mom watches Connor.
