The fact of the matter is that Labour have a relatively comfortable majority of 66 and will have little trouble whipping in their chosen party line; 1.9%. Furthermore the Conservatives have also agreed 1.9% in principle; although they aren't whipping, this will more than make up for the odd half dozen Labour backbench rebels.

The maths just isn't there. Not going to happen and not anywhere near close.

The only thing Labour are likely to lose a vote on any time soon is extension to the 30-day pre-trial detention. The entire opposition will vote against it, and there are about 50-odd Labour MPs who rebelled against it last time.

What will kill Labour this parliament will be constant scandal, not parliamentary rebellion. Sadly Labour frontbenchers don't seem to be as honourable as Conservatives; if Peter Hain, Jacqui Smith and Harriet Harman had been Tory frontbenchers, they'd have been forced to resign months ago. They could cling on to power until 2010.
