Well, i think sometimes people use their current favorite picture for their profile picture, because they want to look at it all the time or be reminded of their kid / significant other. They may not think of their profile picture as a representation of themselves to others, even though that's what it's *supposed* to be. They use it more like... a decoration.
My Facebook profile picture is one of me hugging Boone.... not because i think Boone (or Mom) is my identity, but because it's the only recent photo of me that i like ;-)
Oh I don't mind stuff where it's 'Here's me and my husband' or 'Here's me and my kid.' But there's a lot of pics with significant others where the girl is like peeking around behind his shoulder, almost an afterthought to the picture.
Knowing the proclivities for robotics and mad science that run in that household, that would not surprise me in the least. I fully expect to come over one day and find one of you as a mechanical skeleton piloted by a brain in a peanut butter jar.
