Valentines.
"Hyung! Do you know what day it is today?!" Taemin excitedly bounced on Onew's mattress, jostling the elder awake at 4AM in the morning. The exhausted leader had absolutely no idea, since he'd just reached home two hours ago, and the corners of his eyes still had the traces of his Ondrew makeup.
"Ungh mumpflm." He mumbled into the pillow, pressing his hands to his ears in a futile attempt to block out the boy, who then proceeded to flip Onew over and straddle him, cupping his face with his hands.
"It's..." he announced, tension and excitement building in his voice. "TODAY!" Cackling gleefully, he pinched Onew's cheeks before jumping off to the bathroom to get ready for school. Onew blearily stared through slitted eyes at the ceiling, thinking to himself. Did he just wake me for that...zzz…
At school, as it was every year on the 14th of February, Taemin was flocked by girls at every step. They all flushed and held out boxes of chocolates, letters and various other gifts, before running away squealing with their friends after Taemin accepted it with a smile and a polite nod. Before he'd even reached his classroom, his arms were overflowing with presents, and his bag was so full he couldn't close the zip.
When he flopped into his seat and deposited the pile of gifts onto his table, he discovered another stack neatly arranged right next to his table, courtesy of the girls in his class and those just next door. Weakly, he smiled at the girls as he felt the glares and envious looks from the guys in his class boring holes into his back, and Taemin sighed dejectedly. School was already hard enough without days like Valentines, whatever guy ‘friends’ he’d made in the past year had most certainly come to hate him just because of today, a day when all he did was walk to class.
I just want to be a normal boy, who goes to school, and responds to the name of Lee Taemin. Not known and loved by the girls who think they know the Maknae Taemin of SHINee. And besides, they don’t really matter, but…he doesn’t even know it’s today.
When Taemin got to the company building after school, having borrowed a cardboard box twice his size from the janitor just to bring back his presents, he found another pile waiting for him at the reception. Trying to seem pleased, in case the girls were lurking somewhere watching his every move, he carefully placed each gift into the box as if they were his most treasured possessions. And true enough, there were squeals from behind the lobby pillars, which Taemin made sure to steer clear from on his way to the dance room.
When he got there, Key and Jonghyun immediately pounced on the box, joyfully going through the gifts and extracting the chocolates like miners sifting for gold. Taemin left them to it and slumped next to Minho on the floor, who instinctively put aside his game for he obviously troubled boy.
What’s wrong, Minnie?”
“Isn’t Onew hyung here yet?” Taemin replied, scanning the room for some indication of the leader’s presence. Minho sighed and picked up his game again.
“Musical rehearsal, we’re supposed to start without him. Again.” Minho couldn’t help but to pointedly emphasize the last word, and the fact that the leader had been missing at most of their group activities for the last month, which Taemin tried his hardest to ignore.
He wasn’t doing it on purpose, but the leader was drifting apart from the group due to his solo activities. Key didn’t even bother nagging at him anymore because he knew he’d see Onew in the same state the next night, and Jonghyun had pretty much been in charge about organising their schedules with their manager. Shaking his head and trying to steel his heart, Taemin stood up and clapped his hands to get his hyung’s attentions.
“Alright, let’s start practice, shall we?
As the clock struck 2AM, all the members save Taemin had fallen asleep, but Onew's bed was still empty. As usual, he was out late with the cast of his musical, his new family. Taemin thought to himself bitterly, he prefers those adults to kids like us. Just as the boy's eyes fluttered close over hot tears, Onew stumbled through the main door, his cheeks flushed with alcohol. After scrubbing off the remnants of his makeup and cleaning his mouth the best he could, he crept into the room noiselessly, crawling onto his bed just next to Taemin's.
Staring at the sleeping boy, Onew found himself drawn closer, until their faces were a hairs breadth apart. Taking a deep breath, he closed his eyes.
Taemin dreamt of strawberry kisses that night.
White Day.
Taemin hadn't actually planned to reply any of the hundreds of Valentine confessions that he'd received a month ago, but he felt it too cruel to appear at school empty handed, so he'd stayed up all night after employing Minho to his cause. In three hours, each of the boys managed to complete, in flawless penmanship, two hundred letters. Each said "Thank you for your kind thoughts, but unfortunately I cannot return these generous feelings. Please continue to love and support SHINee, and we will continue to work hard for you!" With a squirt of Minho's Eau De Man-scent, which would probably be sniffed by the girls until they got high on it, and a pale white envelope with Taemin's signature on the front, the gifts were more than sufficient.
At school, the girls were no more subtle than they had been a month ago, some even asking him right out "where's my gift, then?". To which, Taemin handed them a letter from the stack with a smile and a polite bow before walking away, leaving them standing there in stunned silence. Taemin endured the day in a tortured muteness, ignoring the tear-filled glances of the girls and the judgmental stares of the guys, and when the last bell rang he heaved a sigh of relief.
It happened that the company had given them a day off today, so after school Taemin headed for his house, instead of the dorm or the company building. After greeting his parents for the first time in five months, he went to his room to drop off his bag and change. He slipped into a comfortable grey shirt he'd had since middle school, and ruffled his hair while checking his reflection in the mirror. Just as he was about to jump into bed at-nd drift off to slumberland, the doorbell rang, and his mother called him downstairs.
Groaning to himself, he trudged down the stairs and stepped towards the open doorway. However, it was empty, save for the afternoon sun streaming through into his house, and a pale white envelope on the top step with a white rose. Taemin picked up the letter and he caught a whiff of the rose in his hand as he pulled out a cream coloured sheet of paper from the envelope.
Follow me!
Those words were stenciled in gold onto the cream paper, with a supple white rose petal attached at the end of the command. When Taemin glanced up, his forehead creased, he noticed a trail of white rose petals leading down the walkway, identical to the one on the letter enticing him out.
Entranced, Taemin followed the trail, all the way to the town park where the trees were in bloom with flowers. Here, he lost the trail, since the path was littered with flower petals and leaves. Then to his surprise, a small girl of about five years old came up to him and tugged on his shirt, whispering in his ear when he bent down to her level.
"Follow me!" She beamed innocently to reveal her missing front teeth, and Taemin took her hand with a bright smile. She led him to the large blossoming tree in the middle of the park, where it was rumoured that wishes came true, if a couple counted to the exact thousandth petal that fell from the tree while they were there.
Before Taemin could ask her anything, the girl giggled and ran off, disappearing into the crowd. All around him, white petals were falling like gentle snow, and the boy held out his hand to catch a drifting petal. Who are you? He thought to himself while rubbing the petal between his fingertips. Then he heard the soft rustle of leaves behind him and he spun around with wide open eyes, dropping the petal.
An angel clad in a navy shirt was treading carefully over to him, the sunlight bathing him with a heavenly glow, and his hair was ringed with a halo. As Taemin blinked and took the sight in, he realized it was Onew standing just three steps away, with a nervous smile on his face and his hands behind his back. Taemin opened his mouth to ask something, but Onew shook his head and the boy was silenced.
"Taemin ah, what did you dream of on Valentine's night?" Taemin flushed as he thought back to that night, but before he could hold it in, the answer slipped out.
"Strawberry kisses." Onew beamed at him tenderly, before taking another step closer.
"Do you want to know why?" The elder bit his lower lip coyly, and Taemin nodded. Now they were one step apart, but Taemin's heart was pounding so hard, he was sure Onew could hear it loud and clear. His breaths came short and fast, and his cheeks felt like they were on fire, as his pupils trembled.
Onew closed the distance between them, placing his own feet exactly in a line with Taemin's, like kids playing a game. Then he leaned over so Taemin could feel the warm air from each breath on his ear sending shivers down his spine and raising goosebumps all over his skin. Then Onew whispered a single line and Taemin's eyes widened as his jaw dropped open, and his raised hands closed around a bouquet of white roses. He felt Onew's warm embrace around him and he never wanted to move an inch again.
"That was my Valentine gift to you."
Every time I write or read the line "sending shivers down his spine" I shudder too.
okay. ._.
U-Kiss is not a good group to write romantic OnTae fics to, no offence to Kiss-Mes. I mean, their songs (or their songs that I have) more match a playful 2min, idk. Just sayin. Maybe I'll try a 2min someday. hahahaha.
Comments, good or bad, are loved. The longer the better.
