Taemin had cried himself to sleep in Onew’s arms, and the elder gently cradled the fragile boy into their room, tenderly laying him down on their bed. Softly, he pressed his lips to the child’s smooth forehead, praying that he could be at peace like this forever. After tugging the covers over Taemin, Onew turned to slip out of the room, but a pale hand shot out and caught the hem of his shirt.

“Hyung…don’t go.” The trembling voice crept out while Taemin’s eyes were still closed. His butterfly eyelids fluttered open as he tugged at Onew’s shirt, making the guy climb into the bed with him. Taemin snuggled up to him, resting his head in the nook of Onew’s arm, listening to the heartbeat of the one he loved.

Onew wanted to ask what was wrong, but he just felt like it was better to be silent this time, and gradually slowed his breathing to match the boy’s. The two lay there in silence for some time, listening to the occasional car speeding past their window, and their twin heartbeats pounding strongly for each other. Then Taemin spoke up.

“What’s happening to us, hyung?” the boy whimpered, the sound of his voice wrenching at Onew’s heart. That one sentence was so full of love and pain and confusion, it was almost as if the boy was pleading him to somehow make everything better again.

“I’m not sure, Taemin. When people are in love, they do stupid things sometimes, things they don’t mean to do. Remember how confused we both were at the start?” the elder comforted him with his soothing resonant voice, as Taemin nodded and thought back to just the year before.

He’d always had a special relationship with Onew, even before they knew they were going to be put into the same group, and that connection just sweetened and flourished with time. Before he realized it, he felt lifeless and hollow whenever the leader was not right by his side, as if the eldest member had some magic that made Taemin into the superstar that he was.

The boy was confused, unsure of exactly what he was feeling, and hesitant to talk to anyone, even Key. That was until one day when he found himself out for dinner alone with the leader. Over their steaming bowls of ramen, after having spilt his drink down his front in his nervousness, Onew had confessed he’d been feeling the exact same way Taemin had for the past year.

“Whenever you come near, my stomach explodes in butterflies, my skin seems to jump off my flesh, and my whole world sparkles. My heart pounds so hard I worry I’ll die of heart failure at 25, and every breath I draw never seems to be enough. But once you go away, I seem to lose all purpose and direction, I feel lost and foreign in my own home. When you’re not by my side, my chest aches, because I’ve given my heart to you, and you’ve taken it away.” Taemin had flushed so red Onew thought he’d suddenly gotten a fever, but he had to admit he felt the same way. Immediately the elder heaved a huge sigh of relief and took Taemin’s tiny pale hands in his.

“Never leave my side, okay?” Seeing the leader so serious made Taemin want to laugh, but the look of devotion and love in his chocolate brown eyes made him nod, breaking out into the brightest smile of his 17 years. Oh how he wished he could smile like that again, and that Key and Minho could just be happy, like they all used to be.

“I hate Jonghyun hyung.” Taemin suddenly declared, startling Onew.
“Why do you say that, Taemin?”
“If he hadn’t come, Minho hyung wouldn’t have been jealous, and Key hyung wouldn’t have been so devastated and torn between them, and we would still be a happy family.” The boy rambled this out in one shot, and ending with a pout, his forehead creasing slightly. Onew shook his head and smiled gently down at him.

“We should thank Jonghyun. If he hadn’t come, Minho would never have made his move, Key would never have known exactly how much he loves Minho, and their lives, happy as they may be, would not have been complete. At least now, they both have the chance to truly ask themselves who is the one who holds their heart, and they have the choice to make of who they want to be eternally blissful with.” Onew ended off with a whisper, as Taemin had fallen asleep. Sighing deeply and praying in his heart, Onew too, drifted off to dreamland.

Minho burst through the doors of the hospital screaming for a doctor, attracting the attention of doctors and patients alike. Tears were streaming down his stricken face, and doctors were slightly taken aback by Key’s completely ashen face, along with his shredded fingers.

However, when they brought Key in, they forced Minho to wait outside. This nearly killed him as much as being unable to find Key. The tall boy paced frantically along the hallway under the stark yellow lights, as if he could help Key with every step he took. Inside, he was abusing himself for not having found Key earlier, for not having known the one he loved better, for not letting Key be happy and love Jonghyun…

Suddenly, someone tapped him on the shoulder and he spun around, gripping the person by the shoulders as if his life depended on it. The petite nurse gasped; shocked by the ferocity burning in his eyes, and the vice like grip he had her in. When he realized it was just a nurse, his fingers immediately splayed open and he took a step back, apologising furiously. She shook her head, but gently advised him to get his bruised knuckles looked at, and probably an IV drip too.

At the sound of her calm, soothing voice, Minho felt the strength flow out of his body and his legs gave way beneath him. He collapsed weakly against the wall, his vision blurring and cold sweat drowning his face. The last thing he saw was the nurse calling for someone to help bring him into a room.

When he awoke to the stark harsh white lights in the ward, he jerked up in the bed and frantically looked around for Key. The nurse walking by grimly smiled at him before drawing back the curtains around the bed next to his, to reveal a pale fragile body hooked up to at least four beeping machines and several IVs flowing into his arm. If anything, the sight of Key laying lifeless there on the bed made Minho feel as if he was the one on that bed, so in love but yet so hurt by it. Minho would give Key the world if he asked for it, but all he wanted in that instant was for Key to wake up and be himself, the obstinate nagging hyperactive one that he loved.

Key returned to the dorm after a month long stay in the hospital, but he wasn’t the same. The doctors couldn’t find anything physically wrong with him; neither could they explain his…absence. He hardly spoke, except to make simple requests like ‘food’ or ‘park’, and jumped at the smallest things like the gas stove being turned on.

Of course, the others took him in and loved him the way they knew how; after all, he was once their umma. Taemin took over the job of feeding him, Minho was in charge of cleaning and Onew of entertaining. He still didn’t laugh, but Onew trying to reading the newspapers upside down occasionally made him crack a smile, which was equivalent to his reaction to a 90% off sale in the past.

It was tiring on them, but there wasn’t much they could do, other than shower him with the attention and devotion that he’d somehow lavished on them without any effort before. They’d never really appreciated all the things he’d done, until they had to do the same, and the boys wondered how so much love had been able to come out of that hollow shell before them now.

They carried on living like that for over a month, with their lives entirely revolving around caring for Key. Onew and Taemin never went out on dates anymore, and Minho started to find even climbing a flight of stairs was tiring. It wasn’t a burden, neither was it a joy, but it was just necessary. Until the three came back one day to find Jonghyun sitting with Key on their sofa, just like old times.

Minho stepped forward angrily, ready to kick him out, literally, but Onew grabbed his arm and placed a finger on his lips, telling him to listen. Jonghyun was talking animatedly to Key, something the three had tried repeatedly to engage him in, but the only responses they got were the slight glimmer in his eyes or the barest turning up of the corners of his mouth. However, this time it was different.

“Do you remember the park, Key? The one in the middle of town, with the trees and the water fountain. Remember the water fountain, Key? It has statues of angels on it, and you once said that Taemin resembled one of those angels.”

“He’s my angel. My baby angel…” Key mumbled, staring off into the distance. That was the first proper sentence that he’d uttered since returning from the hospital, and the trio stood dumbstruck where they were.

“Jonggie, remember the swings?” Key asked, tugging on Jonghyun’s shirt. Again, the members couldn’t help but gape at Key actually initiating a conversation, let alone asking about past memories. Jonghyun nodded and laughed, before jumping to his feet and grabbing Key by the wrist.

“Let’s go visit the swings again, then!” cheerfully, he started to lead Key out the door, helping him do up his laces. Minho took a step forward to follow them, but Jonghyun shot him a look that made him stop and clench his fists in frustration. I’ll take care of this now, not you.

Once the boys left, Onew and Taemin immediately brightened up, celebrating the indication of Key’s recovery. However, when they tried to include Minho into their festive mood, the boy just ignored them and slammed his door shut in their faces. They sighed, but there wasn’t anything else they could do, unless Minho made the choice himself.

Over the next few weeks, Jonghyun came by every day to visit Key, often taking him out around town to various landmarks and amusement parks. Every time he appeared at the door, Minho disappeared into his room, and Onew and Taemin decided to leave him to do whatever he wanted. And to their delight, Key did start getting better. He spoke a little more at home, ate proper meals without having to be fed, and even could sleep without being distraught by nightmares every few hours.

As much as he was elated about Key’s recovery, Minho couldn’t face the huge ass fact that it had absolutely nothing to do with him. Key’s recovery was all thanks to Jonghyun. Yes, the main reason why he’d become like that in the first place was also Jonghyun, but Minho hadn’t been able to protect him from that back then, and he wasn’t able to salvage his shattered heart now.
