What took a lot of getting used to for me was that the acceleration was really different from my previous car (a stick shift). The Prius needs to be told firmly that you want acceleration, and then it will do pretty well- enough that when I wound up driving an automatic when it was in the shop for having the seats scotchgarded, I felt like the automatic was seriously lagging by comparison.

I think that any manual transmission will out-accelerate a comparable automatic in comparable level of repair. Sure, I wouldn't put a manual heavy pickup truck against an automatic 2-door coupe, but in comparable levels... The Prius does well enough for little ol' me. With mine at least you can choose "mode" of driving, so if you are dealing with a lot of steep hills you can ask it for more power overall. I don't know if that's a newer feature or if they've had it for a while?

Mine is a 2005 model and only has two modes: drive and brake. Brake is really nice when going down a long grade.
