Which is worse?

Well, I have two ride options to come home. If I go by way of Cedar Rapids, I cannot bring my cello and will have to leave it at the new house for a few weeks until my father gets the time to drive 18 hours both ways specifically to come get my cello (there isn't enough room in the car and the first half of the flight would be on a tiny jet). Hun, I have a feeling that you will be fine if you book a seat for the cello. Call up the airline and talk to them about it and make sure you get put on the phone w/ someone who knows what the heck is going on. Call twice just to make sure. If they say twice that you can bring it on, it will be okay.

I'm sorry this is giving you so much trouble :(

You will be absolutely fine buying a seat for you cello, dear. I've seen it done with my high school orchestra before (bass and cello, though the bass really was a crisis because HOLY WHOA those things are HUGE). My old teacher did it. My old teacher bought a seat for a monster of a viola (really a violino pomposa which makes it OLLLLD) without any trouble, too. If you buy the ticket for it, I don't think they care what you do with the seat. XD Unless you like...uh. Use it for your gun and knife collection. But that's a different matter entirely. ;D It'll be a pain in the ass to get the sucker through security, but you're fine.

Thanks for the advice, honey! But it turns out I have to go by way of Cedar Rapids... so the situation is decided anyways since my ride doesn't have enough room in his car for the cello. Oh well! Into the basement of the unair-conditioned house then. XD
