Why, why does it seem like most professors think that in order to be a good student, one must scribble, highlight, and label everything in every book he or she had ever purchased for a class? I have run into several professors who have pretty near required it, and it makes me want to scream and become an arson

Awww... I hate getting texts with writing in them even though I am not even nearly as picky as you about the text and highlighting. But still it is annoying to try and read around notes in the margin, blindingly fluorescent sections, and calculations over important descriptions (stupid engineers... putting calculations in the worst places... hehe).

Yes, I was lucky. X___X I've never thought that non-literature books would be the same type of issue, but now that I think about, that seems a bit like desecration too!

In my AP English classes in high school, both teachers were advocates of writing in books, taking notes in the margins, highlighting/post-it noting stuff relevant to ourselves. Provided, of course, that it's our own book. Now, selling that book back that you've written all over strikes me as criminal.

It does seem criminal, doesn't it? But then again, I think that writing and highlighting on book pages in general is criminal. And teachers and professors EVERYWHERE encourage it, as you admit to having suffered. All hail post-its! They, unlike scribblings, may be completely removed forever when they are no longer of use, cause it seems to me like the notes you take in the book for one class will never serve you again when you reread, unless you plan on rereading with the exact same ideas and frame of mind as the first time, which, I find impossible for myself. I like to reapproach books with a fresh mind.
