Three
The clues are all there.
The bed is unmade. Bree's hair is tangled.
Tom never notices. Lynette is so afraid he can read her mind, but he can't. Tom never knows about Bree's panties beneath the bed, about the lipstick flush across Lynette's palm or the song in her head singing Bree's name again and again and again. Lynette is so afraid and so good under pressure: "Anyway, the dress is in the closet," she says to Bree. "I hope it fits." They are different by five inches and two sizes, but Tom never knows the clues are all there.
It is the stupidest thing: Tom sits on the earring, and nudges it out from beneath the sheets. Lynette is not afraid, not now. It is emerald greener than Bree's eyes, greener than grass against her thighs and the summer sunset in the Mayers' backyard. It is not damning. Bree knows better than to take it home. Lynette can lie that it is her own. But it is the stupidest thing: before Bree leaves, she tucks her hair behind both ears, and Tom knows a pair when he sees it.
Lynette thinks: She wanted this.
The clues were all there.
