Cost Of Food and Your Food Budget

I was just having a discussion over in cooking about the cost of food and how much the cost of food has risen lately. This month I've had to make changes in my food buying habits, like not buying boneless skinless chicken breasts because the darned things were $10-12 a package for regular old chicken (not organic). They were $4-7 not so long ago.

Oh yes! Then, to add to all that, the countries we would normally import food from are not exporting as much because they need to feed their own people. So, I think there is some cause for worry here about there being enough food. I don't think we'll all starve but I do think there will be shortages and more rationing.

CBS news ran a story about rice rationing going on in CA at Cost Co and Sams Clubs.

The high cost of food is going to be a real hardship for the senior citizens living on Soc Sec, they aren't going to be able to deal with the crazy costs.

I can remember the scandal in the 70's about some of the little old folks having to live on canned dog food because that was all they could afford. I was a little kid and I remember thinking how awful that must be.

I voted "Nope, not at all" on both questions, but those are kind of misleading answers. I live in a rural county that still has numerous farms, so local produce and milk are inexpensive (even the once-expensive stuff is now on par with what you get in the groceries thanks to the food prices rising) and abundant. Had I answered this when I was still living in Northern Virginia / the D.C. Metro area, though, I suspect my answers would have been substantially different.
