Alternative Places to Blog

By now you've probably heard about the major layoff of LJ staff. This has created a ripple of worry up and down my Reading List (flist) that LJ may decline or shut down completely. A lot of folks are recommending backing up your journals and communities and I''ve done that too via: Read more... )

I can't believe Im the first comment on this.

LJ staff layoff is just a kneee-jerk response to the economic downturn. I wouldn't worry that much. The 'no serverance' stuff will be the influence of the Russian mafia or whoever owns Sup. It has survived various crises like this because ther was always someone to come in and take it over, so it's not a huge worry.

If LJ does go, I'll probagly just post at my personal webpsace: http://www.members.optusnet.com.au/captlychee

But I agree that a backup is prudent.

Sadly, there are a lot of knee-jerk and not so knee-jerk responses to the economic down turn going around.

I'm hoping LJ will survive as I am quite comfortable here.

I have no idea where I would go. I don't have an alternate blog anywhere.

Hopefully, LJ won't go belly up so none of us will have to move. *fingers crossed*

I am setting up a bail-out spot at wordpress (Louderblog) but their import is not what it is cracked up to be.

You have to export your lj in 15mb xml chunks and load them up to wordpress. My lj goes back to April of 2001 and is bigger than is easily exported or imported.

I don't have direct experience of it yet, but it appears that comments are lost in this process.

Try the LJ Archive link above, it collects all your posts and the associated comments too. If nothing else you can archive your LJ(s).
Is it Wordpress that insists on the small chunks to import?

The archive LJarchive I think it is called is a good one. It brings all my lj entries and comments. It won't, however load into wordpress.

Yes, it is wordpress that insists on small chunks. *sighs*

Insane Journal is pretty much an LJ clone so I have reserved Louderback there. I just hope I don't have to do it.

A couple of people have praised wordpress and weblog to me. I am not impressed with either.

I don't have an alternative to LJ as yet. As I'm supposed to be doing a total makeover of my website and, in the process, moving it to my own domain, the WordPress route might be a possibility, especially if it's easy to mirror the content elsewhere.

But really it's the interaction of LJ that works for me, rather than lone blogging. However, even if the worst happens, I have no intention of uploading old LJ posts to a new site. I've archived the old stuff for my own reference, but I'd just start again with a new blog. Why would anyone else want to read my old stuff?

Because Wordpress hooks into their websites is why some of the pro authors are looking at Wordpress.

Yeah, I really like LJ the best for the social interaction and the comment threads arrangements. The lone blogging aspect is a turn off for me too.
I also would start a new blog fresh but I would prefer to have my old stuff archived rather than lost.

LJ prolly will be ok but just in case....ya know? And I still like LJ best because of the comment interaction and the collected Flist I can read all in one place.
