Names, Pick Some Different Ones!

Ever go through a whole pile of books and run across the same names over and over? It's like there's a popular name book or name web site with a small collection of names that everybody draws from. Here is my list of over used names that I'd like to stop seeing ( Read more... )

It's fun to see a post from you that isn't writer's_loft ralted. While I haven't been reading much lately, because the eyes just aren't good enough for printed material and I therefore aven't come across overused names, I do recall that the rason 'Mad Max 2' is called 'The Road Warrior' over there is becuae testing showed that people thought the name'Max' effeminate.

In real life I'm gascinated by people giving thei children traditionally unpopular names as some kind of remarketing of the people those names derive from. Oscar Wilde gave the name 'Oscar' a bad reputation, but now that everyone thinks Oscar Wilde was a great guy (and I count myself in that number) there are a lot of Oscars hitting the kindergartens of my once-proud nation. How long before we get the Hitler reset and lots of little Adolfs are jackbootieing their way through our creches and work-based child pounds?

I blame baby name books. Their like a thesaurus of embarrassment. Sure, Kermit may mean 'wise chieftain' or whatever, but the kid saddled with that monicker isn ( ... )

That's because I've mostly been grousing about my asshat neighbours over here, not the most fun thing to talk about (even though it's pretty consuming form my perspective). *laughs*

Oh, poor kids, Oscar? Ick. They will be teased unmercifully with taunts of Oscar the Grouch. Adolf. Ick2.

I know, just because the meaning id cool still means the you have to screen for the nerd factor and teasable factor.

I have noticed a few Hermiones popping up. I'm right there with you on boys being call Jade, that's totally a girl's name.

I'm tired of people in real life naming their daughters "Lola."

I suppose folks of a certain youth might be forgiven knowing any associations, but I'm talking about parents in Generation X who grew up listening to The Kinks. I want to say to them, "Really? You're going to name your daughter after a cross-dressing fellow in a song?"

I haven't run across any Lolas outside of one little old lady, possibly because of that Kinks song. And, yeah, it would make me want to laugh a little.

I rarely run across 'virtue' names (I don't read Christian fiction) but one once in a while would be a nice change from my above 'tired of seeing' list. I even like Patience.
