Getting people to read stuff online is a tricky thing indeed. I've personally found that it doesn't really work, for original work at least. I've know several people that I followed online that wrote fanfiction and then started writing original stuff. Usually the people reading the fanfiction will carry over to original stuff, as long as it's of the same sort of taste.

I can suggest that if you want to join a community for writers, absolutewrite.com is a nice site. I go on there. There are a lot of forums and support. You can also find people who are willing to beta read. You ought to check it out, Em. :)

Yeah, that's the pattern I've seen too, and though I like the idea of writing fanfiction, I just don't have a passion for it like I do for developing my own original characters.

Okay, I'll check that out sometime! Actually, I've been meaning to ask you to beta something for me at some point, but I think I'd like to wait until after I have a more complete second draft. I go chapter-by-chapter in my writing journal, which is good for keeping me writing often, but I think revising as I go messes with my flow a little.

Rejects? I didn't know you were posting anything these days. I must've missed that post.

Yes, posting on my writing LJ keeps me churning stuff out at least, and I have one person who really follows it (or, at least, the only one I know of, because she comments.)

I dunno about the whole quality thing. I mean, if SMeyer can get published and become a bestseller, I figure I have at least a chance, I just have to send it to the right people at the right time.

Thanks for the link! I'll give it a try.

One thing this Japan internship has done for me was remind me my primary goal is to become a published novelist. It's been my dream since I was 12. As good an experience as this was for me, my passion for Japanese is running thin after so many disappointments. It's not gone or anything, I just think I'm going to put it on the back burner for a while after this.

Cool! I'll check it out sometime.

Yeah... well, my characters tend to be in an 18-24 range, so I still think my writing would be classified as YA, or something in between YA and the regular stuff. And unfortunately, since SMeyer has become something of an icon for YA novels these days, if I were to get published anywhere within the next few years, there's bound to be people who'd bring her up while describing my work. It's just like how they compared her to JK Rowling for a while, which I found hilarious in that the two series and the sort of material they cover are not related in the least.

And sure, I'd be happy to. ^_^
