Title: Happy Birthday, Baby!
Pairing: Kaisoo
Rating: G
Word Count: 3,739
Summary: Kids just can’t keep secrets!

“Uh, it’s the simplest thing he should remember, you know. It’s your birthday today and you don’t want him to face your parents - that is if they’re coming today, and not know the occasion. He’s gonna get it from your dad.” Baekhyun muttered.

“You tell him! I don’t want to come back there and casually say, “hey, baby it’s my birthday today.”

“Yeah, whatever. Let’s just leave it like that and celebrate, anyway. You know what? I’m gonna drop the hints and let’s see if your dumb boyfriend will get it.” Baekhyun muttered, laughing.

Kyungsoo finished frying, placing the cooked bacon on a plate as Baekhyun threw the contents of his bowl to the pan. The egg sizzled for a while, as the man tried his best to make egg rolls.

“What are you two making?” Jongin suddenly appeared by the entrance of the kitchen.

“Well, we’re making breakfast for the birthday boy, so...” Baekhyun murmured, looking at Kyungsoo. Rolling his eyes, Jongin chuckled.

“Guys, you’re so sweet. My birthday is the day after tomorrow.” He said.

The two guys in the kitchen rolled their eyes harder, shaking their heads.

“Earth to Jongin.” Baekhyun whispered to himself.

After their feast of a breakfast, Kyungsoo went on preparing their kids’ food by the counter. Jongin had annoyingly asked Baekhyun to leave, although the other wasn’t sure why. He pushed his former flatmate out the house and walked him to the nearest bus stop.

Monggu and Jjanggu sat by their omma’s feet, wagging their tails as they waited for their breakfast. Jjangah was heard barking furiously somewhere in the house, and Kyungsoo was growing annoyed by the minute.

“What’s taking him so long and why is he letting the kid just bark away?” Kyungsoo murmured to himself. It seemed that Jjangah was nowhere near stopping. Irritated, Kyungsoo grunted and forcefully threw the spoon he was holding to the dogs’ bowls, and turned his heels to go to their princess to reprimand her.

“Ya! Jjangah!” Kyungsoo called. Surprisingly, Jjangah wasn’t in the living room, her barks continuing and growing louder and louder. Kyungsoo sighed and followed her voice anyway, ultimately finding her in their room, her tail wagging furiously as she crouched down in front an enormous stuffed toy sitting by the corner. Thinking that it was a new toy for the kids, he just called onto Jjangah, but the poodle won’t budge. Rolling his eyes, Kyungsoo made way to the stuffed toy to keep it somewhere out of the excited poodle’s sight. While he was at it, he saw a necklace around the stuffed toy’s neck, with a ring as its pendant.

Curious, he touched the ring. It was silver and had little studs of diamonds, beautiful but not feminine. Inside it, an engraving was obvious, ‘kaisoo’, it read.

Kyungsoo sighed. “Maybe he remembered after all.” Jongin had a surprise for him after all, and there he was, spoiling the whole thing. It was Jjangah who spoiled it.

Putting it back in place, Kyungsoo resolved to carry Jjangah out their room and close the door, as if nothing happened. There was a bubble of joy in his chest, thankful at least that Jongin didn’t forget.

He went on preparing the dogs’ food until Jongin had come back and without a word, his boyfriend served their kids’ meal.

The two watched as the three munch on their breakfast.

“Soo, are your parents really coming today?” Jongin asked, taking his boyfriend to his arms and hugging him from behind.

“They haven’t called but I think they will.” Kyungsoo replied. “Maybe I should call them?”

“Yeah, go ahead.” Jongin said as he released the other.

Kyungsoo went back to their room to get his phone but it wasn’t anywhere. He looked inside the closet and their drawers but his phone was nowhere.

“Now, where did I leave it?” He asked himself, scratching his head. He stood by the corner of the room, crossed his arms and scanned the area. Their room was tidy, which Kyungsoo suddenly realized. Jongin was the last to stand up that morning and it was unusual for him to make their bed. Scanning the neat room, he suddenly found something odd, and his eyes of course focused on it. Kyungsoo walked closer to the bedside, finding a loose ribbon hanging from the drawer.

Pulling the drawer open, he saw a box wrapped with a ribbon by his phone. Finding a chance to tease his boyfriend this time, he took his phone anyway, quickly opening the box. With Jongin acting as if he doesn’t remember, Kyungsoo decided he won’t act as if he saw his surprises.

He checked on the watch he just took. It was a latest design from Rolex, and hell it looked expensive. He quickly kept it inside his shirt for the mean time, just in case Jongin peeks. He called onto his father, smiling, and after a few rings, his father picked up.

“hey, Dad. How are you?” Kyungsoo greeted.
“I’m home, btches!” A loud squeal was heard echoing all over the house, abruptly cutting off the couple’s early making out in their room. Jongin grunted as the voice grew louder and louder, getting closer, though the words still were incoherent to him from the daze of getting in the moment with his boyfriend, Kyungsoo.

“Ey, love birds, greet me!” Baekhyun pounded hard in their bedroom door. Kyungsoo rolled his eyes before pushing Jongin off, kicking the covers off of their bodies and standing up to open the door for the intruder. As he pulled open the door harshly, Baekhyun came stumbling into the room as he was leaning on the door earlier.

Jongin ended up laughing louder than expected as Kyungsoo chuckled the same.

“Ya! We should go out!” Baek happily stood up and dusting off his jeans, running towards the bed and jumping on Jongin. “and I missed you two!” He said. Kyungsoo followed and sat by the bed side as he watched Jongin playfully pushed the other away.

“Okay, how was your first Christmas together? I’m pretty sure you two were rocking the holidays!” He muttered, brows wiggling in. Kyungsoo instinctively rolled his eyes.

“Maybe it was YOU who rocked the holidays.” He snorted. Baekhyun choked on his saliva, breaking into coughing fits as his face turned red.

He shook his head. “Getting into my pants is an impossible feat now for Chanyeol. I swore celibacy until he takes a shift that’s same with mine. God, that giant is a push-pull I’m nowhere my dream relationship.”

“Well, guess you have me to make you envious.” Jongin smirked. Kyungsoo immediately pushed the other and Jongin was flying off the bed and down the floor even before he had the chance to start his story.

Kyungsoo rolled his eyes. “Don’t believe him. He went up to second base and never got any further.”

Baekhyun laughed at the two, but stopped anyway as soon as he saw Jongin glaring at him. “Fine, fine. I won’t ask about your... uhm, private stuff. Anwyay,” he cheered, “where are the kids?”

As if on cue, the three came running into the couple’s room, jumping onto the bed with Monggu sitting quietly by Baekhyun’s feet.

“Aww, did you miss me?” Baekhyun muttered. Monggu barked before running to the other side of the bed where Jongin was sitting on the floor. “Anyway, what are your plans for today?” Baekhyun asked.

Kyungsoo pursed his lips, thinking. “We got no plans, unless my parents decide to show up today. You know.”

“Wait, what?” Jongin busted out. “Your parents are coming? When? Why?” He questioned frantically.

“Oh my God, Kim Jongin, you’re so helpless. You and Chanyeol should live together instead.” Baekhyun exclaimed. Without his boyfriend seeing, Kyungsoo pushed a finger onto his lips, as if telling Baekhyun to shut up. “Oh, well, let’s go, Soo. Let’s make breakfast. I’m starving.”

“Jongin is one helpless case, isn’t he?” Baekhyun murmured as he batted eggs in a bowl. Kyungsoo was frying bacons in the mean time.

“Well, he doesn’t know. I never told him about it or I may have told him but he forgot.” The other shrugged. “It’s not like I’m always looking forward to it anyway. Besides, he has his ups and downs. He’s getting there, I guess.”

“Good, son. Hey, happy birthday!”

“Thanks, dad. Well, are you coming to visit today? It’s not like you miss my birthdays.”

“Yeah, we’re visiting but your mom is taking a whole lot of time getting dressed. She’s excited to scare your boyfriend away.” His dad chuckled.

“Okay, dad. Tell her she better scare him.” He chuckled. “That’ll make my birthday memorable.”

“Okay, kid. I’m gonna see you soon.”

Kyungsoo chuckled as he dropped the call. Time for payback. He thought to himself. He knew her mother was a good actress. She was, after all, the best of her time. She used to brag about her title as Ms. Seoul back in the day. She used to be a kindergarten teacher, and her love for kids, and basically all of her features, she passed onto his youngest son, Kyungsoo. Add to that hereditary traits, is one cold, icy mask that she practiced well, and when was passed to Kyungsoo, gave him the title SatanSoo in middle school up to high school. He knew his boyfriend will be petrified.

“So?” Jongin murmured as he took a peek. His eyes flew to the unmoved drawer, the ribbon still hanging loose.

“They’re coming today, so I guess you have to get ready. My mom is a terror.” He lied.

“Okay. You get ready first, I have to buy some stuff. Do you need anything?” Jongin asked nonchalantly. “And hey, can you fix the ribbon up, I know you hate messy.” He said, pointing at it.

“Eh, it’s your trash, you fix it.” Kyungsoo murmured, walking straight to the bathroom, as if not giving a single care. He broke into giggle fits as soon as he closed the door. Jongin was left startled outside sighing, and took the box instead, not bothering if his gift was actually still inside.

Jongin was back as soon as Kyungsoo was done dressing up. Without a word, he just played with their kids and put some powder on them, to freshen up. Instantly, their furs were shiny and the three looked presentable for a sudden visit from their grandparents. Kyungsoo found Jongin talking, whispering actually, to the three as he alternately rubbed on each of their chins. Realizing it may be a plan for another surprise, he left the four in their own worlds. The three were listening intently to their appa. Even the author doesn’t know if they understand our language, but let’s leave it up to Jongin.

Kyungsoo sat quietly on their couch and dialled once again his father’s mobile. He watched as Jongin walked into their room, and after a few minutes, heard the showers running.

“Hi, Soo. We’re almost there, wait for us outside?” His father greeted.

“Oh, okay.” Kyungsoo dashed to their front door, searching for his parents’ car. In no more than five minutes of waiting, a familiar car parked just in front their apartment, and a couple was already climbing out the car.

Kyungsoo ran to his mom to hug her, and of course, threw some compliments he knew his mother loves. “Hi, mom. You look good.”

“Of course, Soo. I always look good. Happy birthday, baby. I can’t believe I let you leave alone in the city and find you living with another man.” She grunted, although kidding.

Kyungsoo pulled away, chuckling, “Don’t scare him too much, okay? Just a little. And don’t remind him about my birthday. He looks like planning a surprise but one of the kids spoiled me”

His mother’s eyes grew wide, gripping his arm. “Kids? Oh my God, is it your boyfriend’s? How many?”

“Soo, I didn’t tell her about your.. uhmm.. kids.” Kyungsoo’s father muttered.

“Oh my God!” She fanned herself with a hand. The two men laughed.

“Relax, mom.” Kyungsoo explained as he patted his mom’s back. “Come on. Boyfriend’s waiting inside.”

He was ushering his parents to walk to the front door, until he realized he left it open. He heard a faint barking, Jjanggu’s, not too far away. Goosebumps covered Kyungsoo’s skin as he realized that the poodle might have ran out the house.

“Oh, no.” He murmured to himself. “Come on, go inside.” He pushed his parents in, checking the house quickly if Jjanggu was there. He wasn’t. He ran out the front door, and luckily, he can still hear the other’s barks. He wasn’t too far away.

Kyungsoo listened intently, trying to calm himself down. He searched the neighbour’s front yards, but there was no sign of the dog. “Uh, where is he?”

Suddenly, he heard Jjanggu barking just behind him, arching his back with his tail wagging in the air excitingly. He barked once and then went in circles a few times before barking again. Still trying to understand the poodle’s body language, Kyungsoo walked to the brown poodle. When he was about to squat, the dog suddenly ran away and looked back, as if checking if his omma followed him.

Realizing the request, Kyungsoo followed suit, and watched as Jjanggu sit by their house’ side, a bunch of balloons were tied in a chair. It was neatly tied and carefully placed, enough that he wouldn’t see it from the inside. Suddenly, Jjanggu attacked the chair, and biting on the strings. Kyungsoo ran to stop him, but he was a second late, as Jjanggu successfully untied the main string that held the balloons. It scattered and flew away, much to Kyungsoo’s horror. Learning that it’s another of Jongin’s surprises, he dashed to carry Jjanggu and went inside the house just in time Jongin came out the room.

“You kids will get it from your appa today.” He whispered as he ruffled Jjanggu’s hair, who in return licked his neck instead. He put the poodle down, turning his attention to his parents who were happily chatting on the couch.

Jongin cleared his throat, with eyes of a deer caught in headlight.

“Oh, mom, this is Jongin. Dad, you met him already. Jongin, these are my parents.” He introduced. Awkwardly, Jongin sat by the end of the couch, and Kyungsoo sat by the armrest beside him.

“Nice to meet you.” He greeted.

“Do you really have kids?” Kyungsoo’s mom panicked. “Oh my God, are they from different mothers? How many are they?” His husband coughed in trying hard to not to laugh. “I swear, I don’t want instant grandchildren. I mean, it’s impossible for you two but oh my God, where they?” She quickly said. Jongin held his breath, not knowing which of the questions he’s supposed to answer first.

“Well, Jongin? What to do you, anyway? You work, right? You sure can feed and take care of children?” She closed her eyes dramatically. “Children! Children, not just one. I feel like collapsing anytime.”

“Uhm.. Mrs. Do, you’re mistaken. I have no kids.” Jongin whispered gently.

“Wait, what? Are you two playing jokes on me again?” She grunted, pointing her finger at her husband. Kyungsoo nudged his boyfriend to continue.

“I have three poodles I call my own kids. They’re like my real children, but no, I don’t have kids.” He explained.

She sighed, finally, and calmed down. “Good, because as much as I love my son being happy, I’m not gonna let him be with someone who got a big package.” Her husband chuckled again with Jongin turning red. All the men just had a different idea of the term she used.

“You perverts. I meant daddy and children package.” She gasped. “I guess there’s no scaring your boyfriend away this time, Soo. You having kids here took me out of character.” She giggled. “Come on now, Soo, let’s take out the food I brought in the car and let your dad and Jongin talk for a while. I also want to meet your pets.”

“Mom, they’re our kids.” Kyungsoo murmured. “We see them as that.”

“Okay, okay. I want to see my grandchildren, then.” She muttered jokingly.

Kyungsoo helped out his mother to take the bags from the car. He held one in each hand, and his mother another pack. She asked about his plans of working, since he already told them that he’s taking a break from babysitting for a while as requested, insisted, by Jongin. His mother was in the middle of scolding him not to be too dependent, until Jongin and his dad were taking the bags from their hands. She let go as she continued to talk her son out of the arrangement, as if nothing happened.

She spoke and spoke, unending, reminding his son that he should go work, and stuff like that.

“Mom, let’s talk about it another time. I want the same thing but for now Jongin and I want to spend more time together. He can pay for everything. Besides, if you continue nagging me, your lines will appear and you’ll look fifteen years older.” Kyungsoo muttered. His mother’s eyes grew wide and took deep breaths.

“Okay, okay. I get it. No to fifteen more years.” She giggled. The mother and son were on their way to the kitchen when Jongin suddenly appeared and had his arms stretched both sides.

“We’re taking care of the kitchen today, so you can catch up.” Jongin smiled. Kyungsoo, knowing too well his boyfriend can’t be trusted with the kitchen, lifted his brow at him.

“Oh come on, Soo. We’re just heating everything up. It’s not like I’m gonna add an ingredient or something. Besides, Appa is the master of the kitchen. I’ll just help.” Jongin explained, smiling like a kid.

“Appa, huh? Fine. Don’t burn anything.” Kyungsoo sighed. He took his mother to the couch and called onto the three kids. The three poodles have their collars on, running excitedly as they were given permission to greet the visitors. His mother quickly put her feet up to the couch as soon as she saw Jjanggu jumping like crazy onto her leg.

“These are the kids were talking about.” Kyungsoo said. He pointed at each one as he introduced them. “This is Monggu, Jjanggu and Jjangah.” She picked up Monggu, the least hyper among the three and put him on her lap. “I like this one, he’s not so active... and he’s heavy.”

Kyungsoo patted the empty space between him and his mom and Jjanggu quickly jumped up. He stood by his two feet, his front legs leaning on the woman’s arm. He licked her cheek, making her laugh. “These kids are sweet.”

“Yes, they are.” Kyungsoo replied as he took their princess to his lap.

“Thanks for coming, mom. Though you never missed a birthday, it’s still means a lot to me that you get to meet Jongin, finally, on my birthday, too.” He muttered.

“Nah. We won’t miss it for anything. Besides, when you told me you’re moving in with some guy I was totally surprised. You never told me about your preferences. Your dad kind of accepted it since he realized it was the case, but he was never straightforward about it. I, on the other hand, was delusional about you liking some girl. Oh, and speaking of girl, I never heard about you breaking up with Sohyun? I actually thought that she’s to move in with you, that’s why I asked you many times if what I heard was correct - that you’re moving in with a guy.”

Kyungsoo gasped. “Mom, I told you she-

Suddenly, Monggu stood from her lap and quickly ran into the direction of the kitchen. The mother and son saw Jongin standing there sternly, awkward with his lips pursed into a thin line. Quietly, he retreated back to the kitchen with Monggu following him, and the two dogs as well, who jumped of their grasps as soon as Jongin turned his back.

“Talking about an ex in my boyfriend’s house is a big no, mom.” Kyungsoo sighed, feeling worried all ofa sudden.

“I didn’t mean anything about it, son, you know that. I was just checking up on you. You know I always understand and support you with everything. Sorry, if he heard me, but he should listen to you, right?” She murmured. “Go ahead and talk to him. I’ll explain if I ha-

“Monggu! No!” The two were startled as they heard Jongin yelling from the kitchen. Kyungsoo knew it wasn’t a common command. Jongin was angry. They quickly dashed to the kitchen only to find Monggu pushing a now messed up cake on the floor with his muzzle. He dragged it up to the entrance, while Jongin watched in horror.

Monggu, finding his usual spot by the entrance of the kitchen, laid down and rested his chin on the soft cushion - Kyungsoo’s birthday cake. His face was covered in cream icing, and his younger siblings were circling him, taking a quick lick on his face. They stole bites from the cake, thankfully it wasn’t chocolate.

The kitchen was quiet, except for the constant yelping of the three for their treat.

“Uhm, Jongin, can we talk?” Kyungsoo nervously said, walking to his boyfriend’s side.

Suddenly, their door bell rings. Jongin sighed, leaving his boyfriend’s side to get the door. Kyungsoo followed silently as his parents talked about what happened.

Jongin opened the door, and Baekhyun smiled silently, with a few of Kyungsoo’s friends behind him. “We can’t find the balloons beside your house.” He whispered. Jongin sighed again. Kyungsoo took a peek behind Jongin and was finally surprised. His friends were there looking surprised as well.

Jongin turned around to face him, frowning.

“I guess everything’s ruined, but happy birthday, baby.” He whispered, dejected.

Kyungsoo, knowing how disappointed his boyfriend was broke into giggles. It took Jongin by surprise.

“Oh, you big baby. I’m surprised enough.” He replied sweetly, taking Jongin into his arms. “The kids surprised me enough.”

He then looked at the crowd outside as he pulled away from Jongin. “Come on guys, come in. Thanks for coming.” He smiled.

Jongin pulled Kyungsoo to their room as Soo’s parents went to welcome the guests.

“Okay, now tell me what’s bothering you..” Kyungsoo said, taking Jongin’s hand.

“Well, let me give you my gift first.” He murmured pulling his hand away. Kyungsoo didn’t let him, taking the expensive watch from his back pocket and showed it to Jongin.

“You got it and didn’t tell me?” Jongin exclaimed and frowned even more.

“Well, I decided to tease you since you basically didn’t greet me first thing in the morning. I thought I should wait the whole thing out, up until you show your surprises.” He explained.

“Surprises?” Jongin gasped. Kyungsoo nodded.

“You mean the cake, right?” Jongin continued, a hint of hope in his eyes. Kyungsoo pursed his lips. He knew Jongin would be disappointed to know that he knew all along.

“I mean, everything.” He replied softly. “The stuff toy, the ring, the balloons, the cake.”

Jongin made a whining sound. He took the watch from Kyungsoo’s hand and wore it to his wrist.

“It’s okay, baby. I’m happy today. The kids weren’t just good secret keepers.” Kyungsoo cooed.

“By the way, I want this out of my chest now before we go celebrate with the others. I heard your mom talking about this Sohyun. Is she your ex?” He then asked.

“Well...” Kyungsoo thought, purposely making Jongin wait in agony.

“Well?”

“She’s my childhood friend. It’s nothing. I dated her brother for a few months, actually, but that’s all. My mom was in denial for years so she believed I was dating her instead of his brother. Meeting you finally made her accept that this is who I am. It’s not a problem to her though. I think she likes you.” He explained.

“And this ex of yours? When was this?”

“I can’t remember, really. We dated while we were in university. That was years before I met you.”

“oh, okay.” Jongin finally dropped the topic. “Let’s go?”

Kyungsoo nodded excitedly, until he heard their three dogs barking angrily. They quickly ran outside, all guests frozen by the three’s sudden change of attitude.

“Monggu! Jjanggu! Jjangah!” Jongin called to them, but the three didn’t stop.

The couple went closer and Kyungsoo finally realized who they were barking at.

“Oh, hi, Junmyeon.” He greeted. The three stopped, looking at their omma.

“HI, Soo! I missed you!” The man almost ran to him to hug him until the three barked again. “These guys don’t like me, huh. They probably smell my dog from me.”

“Happy birthday, Soo.” He continued.

“Thanks.. By the way, this is Jongin, my boyfriend.” He introduced.

“Nice to meet you.” Jongin muttered, shaking the other’s hand. He quickly retracted his hand and commanded the three to go to their room, which the three obeyed. “Sorry about that.”

“It’s okay.”

“Oh,” Kyungsoo interrupted. “This is Junmyeon, Sohyun’s brother.”

“Your ex?” JOngin whispered to Kyungsoo’s ear.

“Yup. That’s me.”

The two got along well eventually after Jongin’s initial shock of meeting Kyungsoo’s ex. They were civil enough, and though it made Jongin uncomfortable, Kyungsoo was very happy to see the two getting along. Junmyeon is part of his past after all, and it seemed to him that Jongin is his present and probably his future, too.

After the party Jongin has set up, their friends and Kyungsoo’s parents eventually called it the night, and went home. The two, Baekhyun and Chanyeol was left in the house to clean up.

“So, your boyfriend did remember after all.” Baekhyun nudged Kyungsoo shoulder as they cleaned up the leftovers. “I almost smacked some sense into him in the bus stop. Good thing he told me about getting your friends or else I punched him for forgetting... but why is Jongin so gloomy anyway?”

Kyungsoo giggled, remembering the events of the day. “Basically, the kids spoiled everything. Jjangah showed me the stuffed toy, Jjangah pulled the balloons’ strings outside that’s why they flew away, and Monggu took the cake and thought it was a bed. They loved the treat. But it was okay. The kids surprised me big time.”

Baekhyun laughed. “So, what are your plans for his birthday?”

Kyungsoo smirked noticing his boyfriend by the kitchen entrance. He noticed his presence, and spoke a little louder, enough that the boyfriend would hear. “I’m depriving him of steamy you know what since the holidays, so that’s probably what he’ll get on his birthday.. You remember the doctor costume I showed you the other day?” Kyungsoo said, winking at Baek who seemed to have no idea what he was talking about.

Baekhyun was silent until the hint registered to him. “Ohh!” He said in exaggeration. “The set with the cuffs and all that?”

“I’m planning on tying him up the bed and something like that. Do you think he’ll like that?” Kyungsoo said, trying his best not to laugh

“What the hell, Soo?! Why are you spoiling me with that?” Jongin exclaimed. Baekhyun and Kyungsoo laughed loudly as they looked at Jongin who was fuming red in either excitement or frustration.

“Now that you’re spoiled, I guess I’ll think of another suprise.” He replied jokingly.

Once again, Jongin whined. Who knows what he’ll get on his birthday?
