As I commented elsejournal... it's our RIGHT to protest. It's our RESPONSIBILITY to make our voices heard, when we think our government is doing something wrong.
I have, however, the greatest respect, admiration, and gratitude for the people in the field, over there.
Up to this point I have refrained from saying anything to you about this, because I know our views are most likely at the opposite end of the spectrum. I just don't think it's fair to point the finger at Iraq for violating the Geneva Convention when we ourselves are not obeying it. http://www.alternet.org/story.html?StoryID=15465
Well put. I don't think that war is a game you should enter, period, if you want to remain lily-white and hold yourself up to some fucked up moral standard. I think that we, here at home, need to face the possibility that sometimes our government does stuff that is just as much of an abomination to human rights and decency as others. It doesn't make it right on either side. Just because we masquerade inhumanity under a banner of morality and piousness doesn't change a goddamned thing.
DISCLAIMER: For the nine billionth time, I COMPLETELY support our troops, and as a nation, we owe them a huge debt of gratitude for what they are doing.
And P.S.: The protests here were not breaking the law. There were valid marching permits for each and every one. No one complains during the Gay Pride parade, or during the State Fair, or during that crazy Scottish Awareness week parade, and I think that this is an issue of tantamount importance. Okay, that's it. Please don't hit me. Not my face.
I would just like to say that yes, I too support our troops. For me, I feel that the best way to do this is to bring them home. I value all human life, whether it be the lives of our soldiers or the people of Iraq.
