why isn't the buyer telling you how he wants it shipped? Surely the buyer will spring for it.

Get a bunch of books.... use them as packing material around the radio. Tell the USPS that you're shipping books and only books. Super special cheap rate*. Otherwise, usps has really been cheap for many of my purchases and shipments over the years.
