David Edelstein has an interesting critique of "Million Dollar Baby" in Slate.

i think Eastwood and Higgis presented the movie realistically, showing both sides of the arguement and what these characters would do if they were in that position. it is a difficult descion. and i don't know if i could do the same thing. but that is what makes this movie powerful is that it makes you think about that topic and puts you in that position.

I agree. I think the major failing of The Sea Inside, which is also about euthanasia, was it was based on the life of a pro-euthanasia person; it had an already made-up agenda to promote euthanasia. In contrast, in Million Dollar Baby we are given a person who has already defined herself as a great boxer and yet, perhaps because of that, she opts for euthanasia. In that nuanced portrayal, I believe, is the controversy. A lot of disabled people are having to confront their own situations by the film, and this means the film is getting to them.
