SG-1: s01: Brief Candle, Cold Lazarus, Thor's Hammer

So, these are the next three episodes on my DVD set. They seem to be out of order according to the various wikis and episode guides on the internet but maybe it doesn't matter too much. Also I'm doing a bunch together in one post because they are getting a little boring to me. First off, "Brief Candle." The highlight I guess was learning that ( Read more... )

I think I vaguely remember having seen parts of "Cold Lazarus." I remember at the time, even not knowing any of these people, being sad that two people who clearly loved each other couldn't work it out and grieve together rather than apart. And yes, that's life, and loss of a child often does end a marriage. But I think it may have been more writing weakness as you mentioned and wanting to leave the door open for shipping and off-world "adventures" such as you described that motivated them, not any desire for authentic storytelling.

Deep down, I think seeing this ep so early on and seeing bits of the movie where Jack and his wife were still together may be why Jack/Sam never grabbed me. I'm too sad about his wife and son to be able to get the shippy warm fuzzies. Wow, I'm weird sometimes. :-p

The Sarah and O'Neil from the movie never really grabbed my interest. They were suffering a lot, but I guess it was too soon after their son's death to really see any closeness there. The Sara from this ep looks like she's holding it together. She kept most of Charlie's things but at least she gets out of the house and tries to help her father with car stuff. She's grieving but also dealing with her grief. Point being, I like this Sara better than the movie Sarah, and part of me wishes she and Jack could've worked things out ( ... )

Random aside--wonder why the series felt the need to change so many names (or spellings of names) if we're supposed to accept that these are the same people. Just seems odd and unnecessary.

Anyway, this week has gotten away from me so far, but I hope to watch more tonight.

You got me. *shrugs* Maybe to distinguish the tv characterizations from the originals. I dunno. I'm not even 100% sure that Sara O'Neill had a name change, I just thought I read it somewhere.

I didn't mean to pressure you to watch this week. I just wanted to make sure you didn't skip this one. :)
