Maybe tell him and then take him with you to buy the next snail? I don't know, really. I just remember when I was a kid, I had this fish, Rainbow. And I loved that fish, but I didn't really have a huge reaction to it dying because kids get bored with those pets easily. Kent explained the fish died, I assume he said something about what dying meant, and then I ended up getting my second fish... Rainbow #2.
